If a tree is planted that has potentially invasive roots.......and the tree is kept pruned to a reasonable height, do the roots continue to invade, or do they only grow to sufficient depth/width to supply nutrients to the tree as it stands?

OH is a tree surgeon he said "trees don't want to do anything they don't have to, think about bonsais".......so that's that then.

I guess that depends wether the tree spreads via roots then? which is what most invasive species are trying to do...

Annual coppicing will slow the growth of the root but the plant will still strive to reach its potential & if a tree like say a eucalypt is planted near drains it will still seek out the water in them, just slower than if allowed its full potential.
