Obviously the answer to your question is 'yes'. But having read the articles I don't understand the economics. They are selling rice for human consumption that they usually keep until it deteriorates so much that it is used for animal feed? Isn't that good? Or haven't I had enough tea yet?

I ran this past my dad last night. He couldn't understand it, at all. Can't say it makes any sense on any level really that the richest country in the world needs to protect it's farmers in such a way

Isn't it the japanese farmers that are being protected? It all seems quite bonkers, but then so does almost all economics.

On a completely self-interested note, I wonder if it makes it more or less likely that Arvo's lot will take their show to Japan? Cool There was some suggestion last summer that they were interested ...

and the US farmers and the US balance of trade, this will be why the rice is being imported in the first place, as some kid of deal over duties on japanese imports to the US.

European farmers are not really that unprotected either. I believe the real question is: "Does it really matter that poor people has to starve, in order to keep the wealthy part of the world rich?". The answer to that is that they can not do it in any other way, since being so poor they don't have a surplus we can live on. Their sacrifice is appreciated.
