"And the Good Protestant Lord did smite the Nancy ones with fire and brimstone, for the mincing about in pink lycra trousers and flicking dusters about and saying 'ooh! hark at her duckie' is Most Naughty in His Sight. And so with the Hot Poker of righteousness and the Riveted Trouser-fly of Chastity do I Turn my Back upon them."

No - but as I recall, the stock NI view of gays is taken straight from a Carry On film, with a bit of Julian and Sandy from Round the Horne thrown in.
Edit: a bloke from Londonderry (as he called it) once explained to me "Thurrs twu kinds uv lesbians, rite? Thurrs the ones with blonde hair and dressens and that, and thurrs the ones that compleaonn when youse touch thurr arse."

But CAN you fire an elected representative? Presumably she was open about her views before they elected her.

Unfortunately this is likely to still be the case in every African, Middle Eastern and Asian country, prolly S American too.

Sadly there are many elected representatives throughout the UK that hold similar views to this woman but choose to hide behind their politics. It only takes one strong person to overturn years of campaining. We need to beware of letting such people govern us.

Never really thought of it like that, I always thought it was one of those "no going back" things, but you're probably right.

Whenever I see references to being able to change peoples sexuality I always think of that Tom Sharpe book that made me laugh ---Indecent Exposure I think-----her Christian psychiatrist sounds about on the same ludirous level.

I challenge casual homophobic comments almost every day. "Gay" is routinely used by teenagers as a put down, with little thought or connection to what it means. They are often quite put out when it's drawn to their attention saying "I didn't mean it THAT way". But they can't answer which way they did mean it.

Whilst I don't think it ever pays to be complacent, I think at least for the short haul things are still moving quite progressively at least in the "West" to generalize a bit.
I remember the state of fear the gay community exuded during the peak AIDs scare period, not just about AIDs but the fear that years of slow progression was going to be savagely reversed.
I think it is fair to say that this basically did not happen, and that progress continued

I have to challenge this on my forums, but call me complacent if you will but it does strike me that even at the playground level there is somewhat less malice in it that 30 years ago. To be sure there is a heck of a long way to go, but prejeduice does not just disappear except over the very long haul.

Legislation has progressed, and that is obviously a very good thing.
I am not sure that general attitudes have though. The point Jamanda makes about gay being a term of abuse, is not just among teenagers.
We can never be complacent on any of these issues. As long as parts of the media deliberately confuse people's sexuality with paedophilia, and immigrants with criminals, then it is possible for all the gains made to be reversed.

Unbelievable - She needs to be hung out to dry for comments like that - Ian's right - it only takes 1 person to overturn years of Gay rights campaigning - It makes all those Daily Wail readers think "See I said you could fix it ! "
The problem is how do you get a country with a strong religious presence to move forward - It seems regardless of faith wherever it dominates the political climate we have these sorts of problems particularly in countries with Abrahamic faiths

Well to counter such comments I guess you could apply the same logic- if sexuality is just a state of mind, then it must also be possible to turn straight people gay, too. I think perhaps this lady should be locked in a room with one of these pyschiatrists & not let out until she's well & trully homosexual.

Things have improved ---50 years ago a person with those kind of views would have been advocating making the "psychiatric treatment" mandatory not optional.

There are at least two good ways of messing with these people's heads - let them drone on for a bit, then give them a slightly saucy look and say, "Hmm - you seem to have quite a thing about gays." the other is to point out that if they (a) detest gays, and (b) think gay sex is a revolting activity, then, logically, their ideal course is to encourage gays to have all the sex they can manage and more, by way of punishment.
That usually shuts them up for a bit.

Which is a great tactic generally - but if these people are *in power* then they are potentially dangerous

Have you heard what's happened to the Earl of Devon? Powderham Castle (his stately home) has been stripped of its wedding licence after he refused to let a gay couple have their civil partnership ceremony there. Lots of correspondence in the Exeter Express & Echo http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk
