Illigitimates!

In the late 1970's me an my parents planted a cherry tree on a patch of grass over the road. The grass is part of some council flats by their garages (we rent one). There's already a couple of cherries and pear, left overs from the grounds of the previous Victorian house. But there was a gap and an ugly brick wall. It grew over the past 30 years into a lovely tree with a fine show of blossom. Yesterday some 'operatives' visited to do some gardening etc. They chopped it down! It wasn't diseased, dangerous or an obstruction. We're flummoxed. Call have been made but no-one appears to know why they did it. grrrrrrrr Mad

I blame Gordon Brown.

You know, you might haver a point. Should I not vote in the next council elections?
sean

It would hammer home your message of anger in no uncertain terms I feel.

Should I call on Lumley and Rantzen to do something?
sean

About the tree? Joanna's probably at a loose end now she's sorted out the Gurkhas.

horrid
vengence is good
who cut it ,why ,make em squirm via the "boss",ruin their promotion prospects and how they sleep at night
cutting an adult tree (not coppice)was a capital offence in pre roman britain unless pre sanctioned by the community

There was a letter in the local newspaper this week from a resident of a local village, complaining that counciloperatives had committed "vandalism" when they cut back all the verges of the country roads just when they were full of wild flowers and looking lovely. Confused

Seems like local councils are all becoming rather chop happy at the moment. Any minor damage or trivial risk to drainage seems sufficient to cut trees down; they seem happier with more smaller trees instead.

I had my very own illegitimate 'help' last Saturday. New 'garden helper' turns up and I give him the job of clearing the backmost corner of the garden, where the first fruit tree I ever planted, an Early Moorpark apricot in1991 covers half the width of the garden. I asked him to dig out the bindweed and some new seedling brambles whilst I looked after the apricot, which I'd fan trained out to about 15 feet each side. This year for the first time, after decades of carefully shaping and pruning and pollinating, it had set quite a lot of fruit so I didn't want the branches to weigh down. I went to get the twine but it had been 'borrowed' so I made sure he was OK with his task and went down the road to the shop to buy some more. When I got back, he'd gone and found the loppers and my beautiful apricot is now looking just like a fencepost.

Now I know what that special occasion is that you reserve the really nasty swearwords for Mad

so it's now a plum tree?
Indypendant

please can we have some pics of the "plum-ed" tree Surprised

Ludicrous. Seemingly it costs councils a fortune to insure trees on council property (I guess in case some small child falls out of one / boy racer drives into one), hence the craze of felling them....
