iMac queriesJust some quick queries which someone on here may be able to answer for me - cannot get hold of OH to ask these questions
Do we need any of the following security software on our IMac:
Firewall
Anti-Virus
Pop Up Blocker
Spyware remover
AdAware type program
On our Windows pc we managed to get all these free from ZoneAlarm, AVG,
AdAware etc so if we do need them, where willl I find any free versions
on the net.
Also,
What is your opinion of using Internet Explorere as a browser on a Mac
Is it a secure browser or should we use something like Mozilla
Firefox which has built in pop up blocker
etc.
So many questions !!!

I personally would always use firefox over IE because I think it is a better browser but IE does work on macs but I think tends to lag behind in updates and security fixes but note even in firefox popup writers have found a way round them on occassion but it is no where near a prevalent as it used to be
the mac osx firewall like the windows xp firewall only blocks incoming connections which is fine for most peoples services alongside a good virus checker but won't protect you if you do get infected with a virus
I don't believe there is any built in virus checking so you may want that I personally I have never felt the need to use ad aware software but if you do then you will need to get it yourself
hope this helps

I use an ibook and for security I just rely on downloading the apple software/security updates regularly.
I don't like IE on the mac, it looks nasty and I'm hooked on tabbed browsing which it doesn't do so I personally prefer firefox, but safari is good too.
I know a bunch of musicians who love garageband so I hope your OH is liking it

Security under Mac OS X
1/ Create separate user accounts for an Administrator and an ordinary User - even it its just you! Naturally, each individual could/should have their own login. Give the Admin account a non-trivial password.
2/ Only use the Admin account when installing stuff. Otherwise, use an ordinary user account for normal use. In this way, no nasty software should be able to be installed without you being aware that *something* is being installed - it'll need the Admin User's password.
Obviously, don't install untrusted software.
If you don't mind being thought paranoid, download any installers and run them while disconnected from the internet.
3/ Turn on the Firewall (System Preferences).
4/ Keep reasonably up to date with Apple's Security Updates.
5/ If you are using MS Office software, and exchanging Office documents with PC users, you may wish to have *those* documents (only) scanned for MS Office viruses - those are the only viruses that are likely to trouble an OS X user.
6/ Don't appear too smug when in the company of PC Users.

Thanks so much all for the info - has anyone picked up on my earler query on another thread
basically it is a problem in email
If I send a mail in richtext then there appears to be a pre-set picture on the header of the mail. I can send mail without it if I send the mail in plain text but just cannot seem to find a way of getting rid of the thing. It is currently a picture of a rose - OH is not too happy sending mail to work with that on it. there must be a way of getting rid of it but i just cannot find it

This is a daft question but are you sure it's actually being sent out, my apple mail program sticks on a pic that only I ever see!
Sorry I'm not ever so techy.

Mine's a cheesy pic of me that my OH put on, hence my paranoia it was being sent out to the world, he assured me it wasn't.

Try opening the address book programme and having a look if there's an image against your own details, if there is drag a preferred image onto that to replace it.
