Increasing broadband speeds

With all this talk of fast broadband speeds it seems many places either don't get it or are limited to 1Mbps. Is there a way of speeding this up at all? For example, could you have two phone lines and are there routers that could cope to provide 2Mbps? It also seems that 3g mobile Broadband isn't an option as there's just no coverage in many places.

Also, what would people regard as a suitable speed for working from home? So, email, surfing and remote access to typical IT systems such as databases.

Yes, hunt for load balancers. You can use them to provide extra bandwidth or as we do to provide failover

Thanks, that sounds just the thing. I vaguely remember with ISDN you could use more than one line, and you can get "broadband max" that seems to offer double speeds so thought something could be done.

Now, anyone running two phonelines on an internet connection?

I have used an earlier version of this router:

You can connect 2 separate broadband lines (for which you need 2 separate broadband modems) and it will either double them up or switch from one to the other if there's a line failure. Note that you don't get twice the speed, just twice the bandwidth - a subtle but important point!
