Introduction/Read this first

At the top of the forum index is a link entitled Introduction/Read this first.
Saddened by the who-haa with Truella I clicked on it out of interest coz I couldn't remember what it said. Mine doesn't work, is it my computer? (Usually is Rolling Eyes )
Barefoot Andrew

That's a link to the section of the forum that contains announcements, welcomes and author's corner.

Doesn't work though, it just goes back to the index.
Barefoot Andrew

Not true (for me anyway). It shows that forum section (and all that it contains). The other forum sections (Projects etc) are merely listed in summary.

Jamanda

It doesn't work Andrew.

It doesn't work Andrew.

I have to agree sorry Mr Barefoot Sir Cool
sean

It does what he says it does. But I agree, it's not dreadfully meaningful. There IS a FAQ, isn't there? Somewhere? Could it link to that?

There are these.
Barefoot Andrew

It produces this, which is what it's supposed to do:-

If the section heading isn't meaningful or helpful, we can easily change it.

Possibly the title of 'Site Announcements...' needs attention.
A.
Chez

Ah, I see. It's a title. Not a suggestion? Barefoot Andrew

Ah, I see. It's a title. Not a suggestion?

It is, although it doesn't really suggest that the threads (as per your links) are worthy of attention before owt else.

Suggestions for rewording anyone?
A.
Chez

Could you just make it 'introduction'? And then have 'read this first' going to a Bagpuss' post or something similar that is actually informative? Barefoot Andrew

That link is merely a forum section header. We can change the wording in an instant but not what it actually does (without work).

IMHO...the info given in the 'About Us' section (top right!) sets the right tone and says exactly what we need it to say.

BUT that link is not available on the Home page...and surely it should be?
Liz in Ireland

I have a memory of clicking on something like that, which also told me about paying a subscription (which I haven't Embarassed )....or was that not this site maybe Confused
But maybe new members should be directed to somewhere with info such as when and if you can offer things for sale....just a thought....
sean

We're going to change the activation email that people receive. Liz in Ireland

Embarassed And I've just found the bit about subscriptions Embarassed Pilsbury

just clicked on the read first but to me it looks like im being asked to read 3517 topics or 32998 posts, i wouldnt bother to be honest.... gythagirl

If you DO click on this forum - Site Guidelines etc - which a newcomer might reasonably do - the very first post is a sticky for the Naughty Corner - I wonder what messages THAT sends... Confused Brownbear

I don't know, but we'd better have an agonised, 10-page circular discussion about it that overheats and gets locked, just to be on the safe side.
Midland Spinner

Could we change the title of this thread so that it doesn't confuse new members - at the moment it's at the top of the list so they'll read this thinking it's the actual 'Introduction / Read this first' and be very confused when it's actually a discussion about whether or not a link works. Barefoot Andrew

If you DO click on this forum - Site Guidelines etc - which a newcomer might reasonably do - the very first post is a sticky for the Naughty Corner - I wonder what messages THAT sends... Confused

Not true for a newcomer, as they wouldn't be signed up to the Naughty Corner.
A.
gythagirl

I'm not signed up either - but if I click on it I get all the info on the Naughty Corner and its rules and regs. Barefoot Andrew

Oops, apologies - I mis-read your post.

We can work around the ordering of the stickies by (a) updating the older stickies so they're shunted to the top, or (b) by de-stickying certain items and referring to them in an overall index.

Clearly some overall tidying up is needed. We're on to it, and will report back.
