Iodine BoleteHi all. I found three Boletes yesterday which I think are Iodine Boletes (B. impolitus). Found in the New Forest area under beech & oak. Photos below. One was very large - over 8 inches across. Phillips says they are edible - has anyone tried them & if so what did you think of them?

Seems like boletus badius to me.

b badius would turn slightly blue on cutting. It seems to be a very good specimen - no grubs. Could be a brown birch bolete.

No way. It is not a leccinum. Stalk is smooth. I agreee that b. badius tend to bruise but it could be that the photo was taken just after cutting the shroom. Boletes are tricky though and I could be wrong. Any other idea?

Hard to tell, stem looks all mucky. Have you ruled out the obvious (Boletus appendiculatus)?
You tell an iodine boletus by the smell, cut the base down the middle and give it a good sniff. Smells kind of like iodine and disinfectant.

stem should be more yellow for b. appendiculatus
