iPhoto problems...

Any Mac users had problems with iPhoto? I'm on an iBook G4 and iPhoto used to be fine. Recently, though, it keeps telling me there's no camera or that the pics I'm trying to download are unrecognisable. Any ideas?

My powerbook only arrived on Wednesday, haven't had chance to play with it yet. Hopefully I'll be able to set it up and have a play with the camera this weekend. Cool

Re: iPhoto problems...

Its damn hard to diagnose/troubleshoot a remote (not just unfamiliar, but unseen) system, esp by email, esp when the problem is inconsistent. Hey, I've no idea even what camera you have!

As *always*, the very first thing to do is to restart the computer (not just wake it from sleep), and try to firstly replicate, then simplify and isolate the problem - for example by disconnecting other equipment.
*IF* the only problems you are having is connecting the camera, then you are a long way towards isolating the problem...
Can you connect the camera, with the same cable to any other system?
Once you *know* the camera and cable can transfer pictures OK, then turn to the computer. Its a portable, with exposed interface socket. Is it nice and clean, and undamaged?
Those are the easy things for a non-technical user to check.
Beyond that, I'd suspect the software that talks to the usb interface and camera... Have you done any system updates "recently"? (They are done 'automagically' unless you turn it off.) Have you installed any new software that talks to a USB-interfaced peripheral, like a printer? It could be that there's a clash with the new software. It might therefore be worth seeing if there's new camera software on the manufacturer's website.
You might try deleting your iPhoto preferences - look for a small file whose name ends in ".plist" in the iPhoto folder inside the Library folder inside your home folder, (or possibly in an iPhoto folder in the Library folder in the hard disk window - dunno what your disk is called!).
If all else fails you should be able to reinstall iPhoto from cd/dvd, download any/all updates and reinstall the camera software without upsetting anything else. (Check your manuals!) Before doing that DO make quite sure that you haven't stored any of your stuff (piccies, etc) in the iPhoto program folder...

It does sound like a USB conflict. Try unplugging other devices (printer, scanner, graphics pad etc) and just plugging in the camera to see if it's recognised.
Have you re-installed iPhoto or upgraded from the free version to the one on the iLife CD-Rom?
If so, it may not be able to recognise your pictures and you'll have to reimport them from the folder where they usually reside. Don't be tempted to fiddle with the contents of the folder, though - see this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=165521 .
Newer versions might not recognise your camera (see here and a camera compatibility list here), or you could be running short of disk space (see here).

As for not recognising the camera, I seemed to have this trouble with one of the updates after updating it again it work fine. Possibly a glitch with their programming, try just updating to the most recent version might make a difference.

But that is NOT the reported problem!

Certainly do not fiddle with the contents of the "iPhoto Library" folder located within the "My Pictures" folder.
Please note that I suggested *only* deleting ".plist" preference files located within 'Library' folders (not "iPhoto Library") - this should have no dangers other than re-entering non-default user preferences (and in some licensed products, potentially the serial number). It is an excellent, limited impact, user-possible, step in troubleshooting to affirm the integrity of preference files - which may not be replaced even by a re-install of the program.

It is a perfectly valid criticism of Apple's immutable nomenclature that there are actually *3* distinctly different folders, identically named "Library" in a standard system installation. And that is before individual Apps like iPhoto create new folders with default names like "iPhoto Library".
Confusion is all too possible... !

It's all OK now: a new iPhoto came up and I downloaded it: probs solved. Still can't reduce the file size of pics, though. Confused But at least I can load them from the camera!
