Is nuclear the answer?

The Sustainable Development Commission don't think so:

No No No! Evil or Very Mad

Given the millenia involved in maintaining the safety of nuclear waste, I have never understood how nuclear could ever be considered a good idea on cost grounds, let alone the environmental considerations.

How the divil are we expected to make bombs without them?

There is no viable alternative, we are running out of fossil fuels regardless of the environmental damage that they do, renewable energy is little more than a joke, let alone the monstrous blot on the landscape that wind farms are. Lets have some properly funded research into nuclear, without all of the emotion and hype.

Silas, in 40 years nobody on the planet has come up with an idea of how to safely store the high-level waste from reactors. Presumably the industry has racked it's brains over this one, since it is such a major stumbling block to acceptance of nuclear. How much extra time do you think they need to 'research' this point? Or do you imagine it is safe to proceed with nuclear, assuming a future solution to waste storage as an article of faith?

Supplanting one problem (C02) with another is not really a solution.

Well, you can encase the waste in glass and drop it in a big hole in a dessert so geologically stable that to all intents and purposes its not moving, short of an ice age so severe that we're all screwed anyway. But an Australian prime minister who suggested that got voted out for it.

Nuclear isn't going away, we're not going to be rid of nuclear reactors any time soon. We need to deal with the waste. I'm not sure that the 50 years or so we've been doing this really amount to a hill of beans in terms of the life time of the waste, so I don't immediately see any iadvantage in stopping nuclear any time soon.

It isn't the answer to all our energy needs of course. It still uses a non-renewable resource. More renewable, less waste, less energy utilisation. Its the only way we can get go, its a mathematical certainty.

I think wind farms are beautiful, if we owned land, we'd be happy to have one.

I think we are going to end up nuclear because government reaction to the fact we are running out of recource is so lethargically slow that by the time anything has been decided it will be the only option left to us.
Nick

That and any elected person actually only has to worry about the next 5-8 years. Nuclear waste, in 100 years? Yeah, like that's my problem.

Is that a governtment nuclear reaction. Shocked Now there's a thought.
