Is this a good idea?My first instinct is that its not a bad idea... Street Cars, reduce car ownership and useage through having access to a cheap rental vehicle for occasional use:

I think it's a terrific idea - but sadly they don't work so well in rural areas.

My inlaws make very good use of a similar scheme in Holland.

What M-J said. Our village has a 'community car' though, that you can borrow if you are hospital visiting etc..

It's a little outdated now. I should change it to mention the fossilized spiders really.

Indeed. I was mulling over the idea of bike racks for buses the other day....

The replacing 20 vehicles comes from some research done by Transport for London. In a lot of cases its the families second car that goes as a result of car club membership. Eurpoean research has also shown that people who have got rid of their own car and joined a car club reduce the number of annual vehicle kilometres travelled by car by 60%.

A friend subscribes to streetcar and swears by it. But he does have a motorcycle for day to day use....
Incidentally I think it is only good for short jaunts. The day hire cost is about twice as expensive as what you can get from a rental agency and no more convenient since you need to make sure care is spotless and full of fuel when you "return it".

It is, but the costs look slightly wrong to me. Various car hire companies will bring a car to you and drop it off, and collect it again, for around half the daily fee they charge. If you only want it for an hour, that's grand, but an hour really isn't very long, and you've had to pay fifty quid to start with.
