It's been a long haul...

...but at long last my nephew has been "statemented" and hopefully his special educational needs will begin to be addressed. Anyone who has been through the process will know that it's not quite a simple as is sounds on the directgov.co.uk website. No doubt this is only "the end of the beginning", but it's good news for our family for now Very Happy .

Sorry to hear that Peter. I don't know many actual details of the process as that was mainly handled by my SIL. I think she had help from an organisation that supports parents through the process. Mainly I think it's just a question of keeping going and not losing your rag... SIL did mention at one point that there seems to be an unwritten rule that the child has to be 2 years behind at school before there's any chance of being statemented (no matter how blindingly obvious their special needs are), but I've no idea if that's true, and if it is, it may depend on the Education Authority involved. Best wishes.

Yes, we happened to see the paediatrician the day we heard the outcome. She told us that we were in for a long fight.

It may be even harder now that money is likely to be getting much shorter,

Keep plugging away Peter. You have to keep pestering, continually. I know that it is very wearing, but persistence usually pays off eventually.
Our nephew is going through the same. He was put into the system and waiting for an assessment. Eventually, when B.I.L. phoned to find out what was happening, he was told that nephew has been taken off the list because they didn't send back some imaginary letter they never received. The letter apparently said, "Do you still want the assessment"? Mad Twisted Evil Mad

Yes, it can prove very tiring. We have so many different "experts" involved, that it can be very confusing. But I suppose that it gives us a chance of finding one who can actually do something. Whilst all are, no doubt, very well meaning, the ratio of words to useful actions can be depressingly high. It's not helped by the fact that there is a regular change over of staff,
