Japonica and Pear Jelly?

Just harvested my Japanese quince 'cido', first harvest from the struggling, shaded little shrubs, but got a good two and a hald pounds.

Now, I've got some wild pears too... If I cook them together, say, equal quantities of each, will there be sufficient pectin from the quinces to set as a jelly?

My guess is no. When I made quince jelly it came out pretty runny and that was all quince.

I've always found that quince jelly sets alarmingly quickly (within 15 mins of reaching the boil)
So I can't see why a mix of pear and quince wouldn't work. Maybe 2/3 quince. You could add wild apples to get to 50:50.

Anyone else had experience of this ?

The quinces Sean used were very ripe. I wonder if that's why. Have n't had any the past two years. I wonder if there's any this year as I scraped the dregs out of the last jar yesterday.

my japonica quince jelly set alright. only problem is they are so hard to cut up

My quinces are still small, no where near ready to pick. Last year I think it was the end of September before they were ready.

They made a wonderful pale pink jelly that set very easily. It tastes great with roast lamb or pork Smile

Japonica sometimes seem to ripen sooner. The quinces on the tree at our doctors surgery aren't ripe yet, but most of the ones on the bushes in front of our house were good and yellow.
