Jonny Applesandal, a good idea?

Saw this interesting story on boing boing

The idea is sandals with seeds in their soles for plants which help in chemical breakdown. As the sandal is worn the seeds are released and once the sole has been worn down completely the sandal is returned for recycling

intriguing idea but I can't help but feel that randomly sowing seeds as you walk about isn't really the best way about it and it sounds more like a gimic which is designed to sell shoes than actually achieve anything?
