Juvenile Orphan Hedeghog

Have just brought one in, awwwww!!!!!

Weighs just over 200g so no hope of surviving the winter, poor little thing Sad

I'll take it to a carer tomorrow, or will I Cool No I must, I'm not experienced enough to care for it, but it's sooooooooo cute!!!!

For one night only what shall we call it?
Marionb

sally_in_wales

Scrumpy strikes me as a good name for an autumn hedgepiggly

we need a photo!

I know Smile I'll have to wait though, it's a bit shocked at the moment, so I don't want to distress it. Jody has just come home with a friend and they have decided to call him Derek Rolling Eyes

It's a bit long for a name though Jonnyhoy Confused
Jonnyboy

Hmmm, call it golem then.

We were discussing hedgehogs at work today. Apparently the albino ones on Alderney don't have any fleas.

really? just the hedgehogs or is it like Ireland not having snakes?
Jamanda

Dunno. We decided it was because they were so posh.
sean

Apparently they're not albino, as is commonly thought. Blond hedgehogs.
Penny

Survived the night and is now called Scrumpy Very Happy May try and keep him, as he seems to have settled very well....... Cool

I love hedgehogs Smile Occassionally i have a few visit my garden they use to eat the dog food but it no longer is out side.
wellington womble

Do take some advice on him - I've only just found out my well-meaning mother has been feeding all her rescue hedgehogs bread and milk, and wondering why they don't survive. I think Mrs Tiggywinkles are very good, from memory.
alisjs

saw those blond hedgehogs on telly....they were cute!
I seem to remember that cat food is ok for hedgehogs
Penny

I will, WW. I'm going to ring the rescue people again and check if they think I'll be able to cope with it. It's not a tiny baby, so it should be OK. If they think it best not to, then I'll hand him over Sad

They said mashed dog food with a bit of weetabix or mash in it and water with a drop of honey.... spoilt hedgepig!
wellington womble

Sounds like he'll be fine then. Could be an undemanding pet over the winter!
Penny

Awww - I was a bit worried there, as I couldn't get him to eat or drink, but after a conversation with the rescue people, I disolved a little honey in some warm water, and syringed it into his mouth. After a little while he suddely un curled, opened his beautiful brown eyes and started lapping at the syringe Very Happy I then finger fed him mashed dog food, and after a while he started eating from the bowl

wav

The kids are gobsmaked at how beautiful he is Very Happy I will try and get a picture when he's a bit stronger, but I don't won't to worry him just yet.

He is just too cute. To have a baby hedgehog licking your finger is a wonderful experience.
Jamanda

Aw. Yay for Derek! Photos?

must be that time of year.

I found one on the village green sunday lunchtime. Just stood shivering, could barely move and surrounded with flies.

We brought him in, warmed him up and spent a couple of hours removing maggots (tiny ones - fly strike I think?), fleas and ticks and fed him chicken flavour cat food.

Poor thing was starving.

I took him in to the vet for them to have a check over and they've kept him in. I've to ring on Wednesday.

But yes they are sooooo cute. And I dont usually do cute.

Careful because they can apparently carry salmonella and ringworm so make sure everything is clean and the kids keep their distance.
