KeyboardsWe've an iMac with a UK keyboard.
My new course is going to include lots of computer work (of the admin, not techie type) on a French keyboard.
So I think it'll be better to have a French keyboard at home.
I asked on a French based forum if anyone has a spare French keyboard for an iMac. Someone replied with will a PC one do?
I've goggled a bit and it's seems the answer is 'yes' if it's a USB keyboard.
As I know you lot are a knowledgeable bunch I thought I'd check with you before I reply...

Any USB keyboard should work, but Macs can be funny, and the French probably have a wierd layout of keys.

I have a french keyboard for my pc, & apart from a few keys being reversed (A & Q, & W on the bottom line) it doesn't take a lot of getting used to.

Yeah, the keyboard layout is slightly different which is why I need the French one at home. It's just too confusing to keep swapping!
So a PC keyboard with a mac is a goer then?

Sean uses a PC keyboard with his Mac. The " and @ keys are the wrong way round, ie they give each other's symbols. Apart from that it's fine.

Do you look at the keys to type? Otherwise, it's just the mapping that changes, surely? Or are you hoping to learn to type like a Frenchman?

...or like a Frenchwoman...
I'm doing a course that'll involve lots of computer/admin work - apparently they'll teach us to type quickly and I don't want the English keyboard we've currently got at home messing with my learning! Bad enough that it's a different language with different punctuation rules!

If you change the input to french in system preferences will that not make your keyboard behave like a french one? You'd have to move some of the key covers around to get them in the right place/deploy some sticky labels/tippex.

Indeed. And unless you're looking at the keys, it'll make no difference at all.

Hmm don't know. The keys move do they?!
I'll have a look at it...if French accents start appearing in our posts you know why!
Thanks for all the advice.

I don't think the keys on Apple keyboards come off as easily as non-apple keyboards, especially if you want to be able to put them back on again.

Thanks a lot!
We'd a spare keyboard from the imac so I've just grabbed it, changed the input language, swapped keys round and put stickers on (I'm going to have to look to start with!).
We now have his and her keyboards!
