Knitted netsIve been making netting on my knitting machine(no, thats not a tongue twister).
This first is some greenhouse shading..
and this is a pea or bean net (im using it for peas)
I got the bamboo support idea from the garden organic catalogue as they are selling pea netting on a similar frame.

Excellent, that looks really useful to be able to do. What's it made of, and how long does it take you?

They are both made of thick cotton bought from the charity shop. The black stuff is like crochet cotton and the white stuff is about twice as thick as sewing cotton. The black netting took about a week as I only did a few rows when I thought about it but the white (which is about twice the size) took about 3 evenings (a few minutes here and there)as I had worked out by this time that I could knit every stitch and then drop every other stitch when I had finished it(didnt come off the needles so much that way).
The limit is really how easily will the material slide through the needles and the width of the machine governs the width of the net ,although pieces could be joined.

does this mean that I can use an old net curtain in a similar way to protect cabbages and things as they grow?

I'm not quite sure what all the dropping stitches stuff means, but the timings sound quite reasonable and I like the way you can fit it in here and there.
Ruby, we are going to use old net curtains this year, some of the overly patterned ones have got surprisingly big holes in so they're not much use (maybe for fruit?) but the fine mesh ones look great.
