Knitting a tunic with a 'pointy' hemHave any of you clever people any idea how you can knit a jumper/tunic with a point at the hem?
How do you start off? I've seen some but never fathomed out whether you start at the top or the bottom.
Any suggestions/patterns would be appreciated.

There are loads of different ways, you could start by casting on at the point and increasing steadily until you get to the width you want, or you could knit top down and decrease to the point, you could work the pieces sideways, there are loads of posibilities.
Probably the thing to ask is how do you prefer to knit, top down, bottom up, flat and seamed, or in the round?

Or you could start with one of those temporary cast on thingies and do the points at the end

I'm ashamed to say
(a) I've never knitted in the round
(b) I've never knitted from top down
but I've seen a pattern somewhere that does a 'top down' one. Thanks for your suggestions.

What's that website with thousands of free patterns? Danish or something... I want to call it Blobs, but I know that's not it. There's bound to be an appropriate pattern on there, anyway.

Who, me? There are several of us with World War 1 & 2 avatars: Chez has another Women's Land Army one and Tahir has an Indian Army one.
I'll post the name of that site when I can think of it!

oh wow, what a great site
I've been looking everywhere for a pattern for a zipped up and lined cardigan/jacket - I think I could adapt Sally's 2nd linked one to do that
....unless anyone knows what I mean and knows of a pattern ??

Haven't used their yarn, mainly because I try only to use British. (Although I did slip last week and buy some Japanese Noro to make myself a pair of really jazzy stocking. )

What supplier do you recommend? The linked one looked nice - and of course so easy to link to straight from the pattern. Actually I must check our local "just-about-everything" shop in the village - he's started a wool corner.

New Lanark are a nice British supplier, I've really enjoyed all the yarn I've had from them

I can second that. It's lovely stuff.
I can also recommend UKAlpaca: beutiful yarn in either pure alpaca or a blend with Blue Faced Leicester, all produced in the UK.

New Lanark is also a good price - since a 100g ball of Aran weight acrylic from my local shop is £2.35 I'd much rather pay the extra 60p a ball for wool or wool/silk from a UK source
thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten about them
And then we musn't forget this one must we

washes great, if you want to full/felt it, wash it vigourously, if you want it to stay as knitted, use the wool cycle. Its very well behaved yarn

Hmmm I'm not sure if this pattern is for DK wool or if it's something thicker?
here
Any knitting buffs care to help me out? Could I knit this cardi in the wool linked above?

Thanks.... I've never tried felting.. . well except accidently when turning a child's jersey into a teddy-bear's one once!

Looking at the yarn description which suggests 9mm needles, its a chunky. Now, New Lanark do a chunky but its new, so might not be on their site, you may need to call them and ask about it

Thanks. I'll look and see what chunky the man in the village has....

do watch out for cheap yarn though: it usually feels horrible when you knit with it! doesn't always wear well, either.

Erm .... .admission time.....
I bought some of this on ebay...

Anura - I just searched that Drops site for a tunic..... Here are 2 sort of pointy hems....
They are both on page 2 of a search of the site for "tunic"
HOpe that helps! ( cos I hijacked your thread )
Happy knitting all
