Knitting with strips of fabric

I was in The Eighth Day, a well known HFS & Vegetarian cafe in Manchester the other day. They sell lots of recycled & hand producecd stuff, you know the kind of thing, but really expensive..

There was this shopping bag & when I examined it, it was knitted in cotton yarn and also stripes of fabric. It cost £63!!! It was only a smallish bag too.

Had anyone any idea of how to knit with fabric, whether you should cut the strips on the cross or along the line of the weave and how wide the strips should be?

It looked really so effective. I've got a brown slub silk wrap I bought from H&M a few years ago, too soft to use as a garment so I thought that, mixed with some boucle wool, would make a fab bag or even a waistcoat.

That's great Toggle, thank you. I'll have a proper look when the sun stops shining on my computer screen! (Mind you, it would be really miserable without it, as it's blowing almost a hurricane here with my new unused compost bin having been blown around the garden during the night.

One thing I forgot to ask, could I use old T shirts, as you can buy them in my local charity shop for 50pence, the colours would be great mingled together.
