L.E.D Lighting

Is this a viable alternative? The cost of entry may be prohibitive but if new eco builds incorporated them into the costings?

or is this a sort of Aldi argument - the one that has all the ex Waitrose customers shopping at Aldi because they are economising? Cheap will always win out Confused

LEDs are very efficient but they're not as good as incandescent in providing 'warm' light. However, there have been breakthroughs recently which may see warm light LEDs on the shelves in the next few years.

If you don't mind the blueish tinge cold light they emit then they're brilliant (literally).

If I recall correctly both me and Tahir got a little burnt buying Led bulbs a couple of years back.

They did not last and the light levels were woefully bad Sad

No doubt things have moved on, but I'm waiting for someone else to give a positive review this time!

There's a few people that have tried them at the AECB, they both had similar experiences to me and Jema. Fluorescent is more economical and efficient, and gives a better light.

We've replaced the halogen downlighters in the bathroom with 1.5w (I think) LED units. I have two white and one blue It works really well in there, we've not had to change a bulb for a year or so.

We then replaced some halogens in the kitchen for more 1.5s (4 bulbs) and the results are woeful. It's more of a background light and we need to turn on the strip lights under the cupboards to do and cooking.

I think I need to get some brighter ones

But presumably, a background light that will still be available when the mains power fails provided you have a backup battery?

mine are just plugged into the 240v mains sockets, like for like replacements for halogen fittings. They run ice cold and are of a much lower power usage per lumen than incandescant or CF lights. I guess I needed to get more LEDs in the units in the kitchen.

We've got a variety of LED bulbs in various lamps etc. The warmer tone ones don't last as well as the cold (and were the more expensive sort!) and our cold ones are all still going fine about 3 years after we got them - we solved the cold issues with one bulb in my lamp by painting it with glass paint in a rose pink shade (matched to the gels that are used to create a 'soft daylight' in stage lighting)
