leatherHow do I soften leather? I am making a sheath but the leather is too solid and hard. I want it to be pliable once finished with give and soft to the touch.
Any potions to recommend?

Horsey-type shops sell a liquid called Flexolan which waterproofs and softens leather.

I've used warm water to wet-form a sheath, it goes nice and soft but dries harder than the leather originally is. You can buy leather creams or use dubbin but I'm not sure how soft it would get leather, do you have a scrap you could try?

For some reason I have urine coming to mind. Is this somethng that was used? I think the american indian squaws used to do it to soften buckskin. Need a good wash afterwards if so.

Yep tried & tested military method of breaking in new boots.
That & hard work flexing the leather.

Saddle soap will soften it. I use urad I think and a soft wax that moisturises the leather. It would keep it soft but is that what you want?

Thank you, might try the free option first and if that fails I may possibly spend money on saddle stuff.
