Lime washing outbuildings

Watching "Return to a Pembrokeshire Farm" on TV last night, I wondered why my whitewashed outbuildings have never looked as good as that! I assume I must have been using the wrong stuff (the lime you buy at the Farmers' Co op and mixing it with water and cooking oil until the consistency of cream.)
I shall have to make the effort to do them again in the Spring - can anybody tell me how to do it correctly and cheaply and without any lumps? I know I've got to keep using lime or the whole lot will fall off!

I'll bring this to Gervase's attention lowri. In the meantime, click on our website (Horgan & Webb under my sig) because I think Gervase has put some limewashing advice on there.

Edit: just checked for you. Yes, there's an advice sheet on limewashing.

If you want any further advice lowri, please feel free to PM Gervase, or ask in this thread. Very Happy

Thanks for the advice, M-J, I have read the fact sheet with interest.
I attended a workshop about use of lime at Llanerchaeron some years ago, and seem to remember that slaking lime was a bit terrifying! I also think that lime putty was available already mixed, in buckets. Where would this be from, how much would one bucket cover, and what would it cost?
Gervase

Slaking lime isn't a worry, provided you add the quicklime to the water and not the other way round. Hot limewash made with quicklime and some tallow is the most hard-wearing stuff - You can get it from here, and one bag will make enough to do several outbuildings.
Lime putty is an easier option - mix putty 1:1 with water and stir in some linseed oil. You can get putty from the place above or here.
As for price, slaking your own lime is the cheapest option.
Where in Ceredigion are you? I could always bring some over and talk you through it.

Thanks Gervase for the advice - brilliant! I am near Dihewyd so not that far from you! But I am not ready to do it yet as there are various other priorities. I would be grateful for a "tutorial" when the time comes! That would be great! Maybe in the Spring? Many thanks.
Gervase

My pleasure. That's very close - in fact I probably drive past your place several times a week at the moment!
