Local bee keeping group

Our Allotment bee keeping group is considering a more formal set up. We aim to run it as a training apiary and we know there are others in the village who are at the stage of being interested but not yet 'with hive' and would support us, so if we wish to potentially raise money for equipment and or training etc we would like to explore doing this properly.

Can we apply to become a new BBKA association? Or there is an Oxfordshire Community Action Group network which we think we can join.

We know we need to set up constitution and officers etc. Just musing on the best way to go about it

I'd have thought the best people to talk to would be the BBKA them selves. I imagine it would be quite costly to set up from scratch though. Why not be an outreach group of your existing group?

You will have alot of problems becoming an association in your own right - the BBKA are very reluctant to even let large branches like my branch Lancaster Beekeepers become an independent association - because it creates more work for them - Also to be an association - you would need to be set up as a charity with a turnover of more than £5000 per annum (can you tell we've been doing this sort of thing lately Very Happy )

In reality - you will need to become a branch of Oxfordshire beekeepers - if they allow branches - that way you get the insurance cover from the BBKA that you will need as a training apiary - also as you are south of Birmingham - you will definitely need BDI insurance against things like AFB and EFB

I can put you in touch with our Chairman and Secretary - who know far more about this if you want Julie

that's useful stuff to think about. Thanx. We're just at the musing about it stage; don't want to rush things at all but want to be above board and properly done.
