Locked out

I cannot log into my (administrator) account on the laptop. I get the message

User profile service failed the logon.
User profile cannot be loaded.

It uses Vista. Can't update anything now as it doesn't recognise me. I can get in using my daughter's logons.

Any suggestions as to how to remedy this please?

A quick Google yielded this...

I've no idea whether it will cure you propblem or make things worse. No warranty.

Go back to XP?

That would mean re-installing all your software - rather a sledgehammer to crack a nut etc.

Thanks Vegplot. I'll have a look at it when I am at home.

'Twas a joke based on the general view of Vista Very Happy

I'm going to experiemnt with using Windows Server 2008 as a workstation development platform, it's supposed to be 17% faster than Vista. If it means I can type 17% faster and make me 17% more productive by writing 17% cleaner code in 17% less time then it's worth a try.

That's a very interesting idea. I have been thinking of switching from Vista 32-bit to Vista 64-bit since my main system has 4Gb RAM which 32-bit Vista can't fully utilise. I have briefly tried Server 2008 and been pretty impressed but not tried it for real. Obviously the 32/64-bit issue will still arise with Win2008.

My desktop is 32bit but I have Windows 2008 Server Standard Edition. I also think I have Enterprise as well somewhere in the Action Pack disk collection.

I've ordered a new HD from Dabs today. Tomorrow we'll see if the claims run true.

Looking forward to hearing about your adventures!

Um, 'scuse me. My first question...

The resolution to this is apparently to fiddle around in the registry and deleting that user. That user is the administrator and for someone unused to doing this, seems a risky idea... Help! Sad It's a Vista glitch shouldn't they sort if for me?
