Long running serverI've just retired our old office Exchange Server, it's been running continuously for over 8 years. Why this is surprising is that it’s still running on the same single disk without any failures and it’s a home built machine. They just don’t make ‘em like they used to. The only reason it’s being retired is that we’ve finally upgraded the software.

Some of the very old pc's I have taken out have been a marvel they still worked. Almost solid lumps of dirt dust sticky goo & fag smoke. New ps's fall over if they dont get a dust out occasionaly.

Win2000 Server or NT? We had an ISA firewall running non-stop for I would guess 3-4 years, I would not think that possible on NT but Win2000 was much better.

WinNT running Small Business Server. It's been very stable hardly ever needed rebooting. It was used a file server as well. I intended replace it 3 or 4 years ago just never got around to it.

It's actually less taxing on a machine to keep it running non-stop. It's the power cycles which potentially cause damage.

We've just decommisioned a NT4 web server in Telehouse that had been running for about 7 years. With less than 150 sites it was rock solid it simply didn't need rebooting. More than that it suddenly become very unstable.
Anyone want a couple of 4U server cases?
