Looking for a good light to work by

As the nights draw in it is becoming apparent that the 11w energy saver bulb I have in the standard lamp behind the sofa is not giving enough light for me to knit by when I'm working with dark yarn.
What I need is some sort of light ( and I was thinking maybe LED) which I could clip to my existing one or otherwise a stand alone type thing.
If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated Smile
I may have posted this in the wrong section- I don't want to build the light- just looking for links or ideas that other people use Embarassed

I use old anglepois lights from boot sales. They are ugly as sin if you aren't into retro but they direct the light exactly where you want it even with an energy saving bulb. Ours tend to brighten up after a while though they are really dull when first switched on.

Have a look at these:

They'd fit in any kind of light that takes those little two pin 12v Ikea-like kitchen lamps.

Have been ferreting in spare moments. What you're aiming for is high lumens and as close to daylight in the lighting colour as you can manage. I can see why compact florries might not hack it for you but they're not bad used in the way Bodrighty suggests but you do have to get a new one, one thats as high wattage as you can find (20 odd watts is what you're looking for if you can find any) and they now do ones that claim to be closer to 'daylight' colour. Or warm-white they sometimes bill themselves as.

If I come across anything else on my travels, I'll report back!

Thanks for that folks, it's much appreciated.
I'll have a scout on Ebulbshop too. Didn,t realise 20w energy savers were available.

My Anglepoise won't work with the new bulbs. The ballast is so heavy that the Anglepoise illuminates the keyboard (from a distance of 2 inches) and nothing else. Counterbalance out of kilter.
Admittedly I've only tried one sort, perhaps I should persevere!

Same problem here.

Have you tried the 11 watt energy saving spot lights. we've got them all through the house, they a equivalent to a 50 watt bulb, they do take about a minute to get to full power

I've seen and been impressed by these (ignore the negative comment), while there are variations on the Anglepoise here, here and here

Not cheap are they- I was looking for something around the £20-30 mark.
I did find this though http://uk.daylightcompany.com/home/product/?id=137
