Mac help needed please!! Sorted now.

I bought a "virtual fireplace" DVD off eBay which is supposed to work in "almost all DVD players". Popped into the Mac DVD/CD drive and not only does it not work, but I can't get the bl***y thing out. There's no disc icon on the desktop, so I can't drag it to trash and the eject button doesn't work, I can't see it in Finder, I have tried restarting, I've tried pulling (gently) on the drawer, so WHAT DO I DO NOW???

(I should have known there's no substitute for a real fire!!)

Get a proper computer.

Failing that, there's usually a small hole next to the disc drive - stick something in it.
MarkS

what model of mac is it ?

desktop/laptop?

As NL says many cd drives have a little hole for sticking a straightened paperclip in.

Mac help needed please!! Now sorted :-)

I'll ignore that first remark NL.

Forgot to say that there is a total absence of small holes to stick things into near the drive drawer, but panic's over anyway. I decide to restart again - first time round I actually had to switch off at the mains 'cos everything had seized up, this time I did a "proper" restart and the disc icon appeared on the desktop so I was able to drag it to the trash. Phew!! Very Happy Very Happy

Edit: How do I change the subject line? Or will a mod please just bin the thread or something now I've sorted myself out? Thanks.

Thanks Very Happy

Apple's ordinary recent (with your G4 iMac) keyboard has an "open/close cd/dvd drawer"/eject key at top right of the numeric keypad. Press it!

There's also a little system thingie (not enabled by default) that gives you a drive-opening menu at top right in the menubar.
See http://www.creativetechs.com/tips/quicktips_51.html

And holding down the mouse button at startup has (since 1984) ejected any removeable disks (floppies in those days) before trying to look for a disk to start up from.

And if you look at "Help" in the Finder and search for "eject" it will give you a couple of other ways "when all else fails".

Not relevant to this question - but one that sadly crops up too often.
Mac AND pc.
*Don't* put little business card cds into *slot* load drives. They do get physically stuck.

Thanks dougal - hopefully it won't happen again, but I'm printing off your suggestions just in case Very Happy

Eject button didn't work either - forgot to put that on my list of tried and failed....
