Making a cake stand......or at least I plan to.
Sweet old plates and saucers are cheap as chips in charity shops. And drilling through porcelain/glass turns out not to be all that hard...
But I can't work out how to get the metal screw-together bit for the middle of a cake/fancy stand. What are they called? Where would I buy them? Strikes me as ideal Christmas present fodder, if only I can get the metal bits.

Could you make a wooden one on a lathe?

B&Q sells steel, brass and aluminium tubing of various gauges. You could either epoxy a small nut into the ends or use a small tap to cute a thread on the inside of the tube. It may then be possible to use a piece of threaded metal - cut from an industrial screw or bolt, say - to join two pieces with the drilled plate in the middle (with a couple of washers to spread the force, and ideally a piece of PVC pipe or similar in the hole in the plate to protect it).
I've never done this, and have no idea if it would work, but it's a thought.

That would be adorable But I haven't got a lathe, and my lathe-ing skills suck

Awesome! Thanks!
Your powers of google-fu have out done mine
Going to go and scour charity shops this week for plates.

I've seen some clever ones on tinternet made with glass plates and sundae glasses, held together with glass cement. You might do something similar with china, using little bud vases or something in between.

What a fabulous idea. More things to take up space in my craft room until I get round to them. Himself will be pleased!

Ooh yes, I was going to say something like that - I think this is the one I have seen before but it seems quite popular:

On the link Sean found, this looks like an excellent idea if you have plates you don't want to ruin (I do know - distantly - people who have matching crockery. Without chips in it. There's posh for you).
Folding Cake Stand for use with any plates
I think there may be something wrong with me as I quite enjoy just looking through pictures of them:

Blimey - look at the prices on those last ones! £50 for three old plates from a charity shop and those centres Sean linked to that cost about a fiver!
I like the ones with a plate at the bottom and bowl at the top. They'd be useful for dips at parties.

Oh, curse the lot of you, now I want a cake stand. What am I ever going to use one of those for? We never have the sort of company to justify use of a tea pot, let alone a bloody cake stand (a corkscrew, possibly. I just don't know enough afternoon tea types, it would seem!)

You can get these for wood turned stands. The fittings can be bought here or here
Hope this helps

You could use it for other things at dinner parties - fruit (plain or chocolate dipped), hors d'oeuvres, cheese and biscuits, whatever...

Pookie has several, and I inherited my Grandmother's outrageously pink flowery china tea set. So one day soon we are going to combine the two and have a proper tea party with doilies and all.

Pookie was talking about doing it on Tuesday; but I don't think there's enough time for the baking marathon required .

Certainly not if I am required to do any baking.

Am I the only one that read that as dollies and thought, 'oh how sweet!' Are teddybears also going to be invited?

No. And I was still reading 'Dollies' until you pointed it out.
Mind you, I thought the naughtiest girl in the school became a minotaur for several years, so I'm probably not the best person to comment!
That's it. I'm putting a cake stand on my Christmas list, and then finding some people to eat cake with!

So! That is what happens to naughty girls, eh? Always wondered what my mother was trying to warn me against....

I've got a 3 tier cakestand similar to the folding one only it doesn't fold. I think it's silver plate. The only problem with it is that the round bit you sit the plate on/in is barely 4 inches in diameter, and some plates won't sit safely without sliding (disaster!) I have found smaller plates to use but it's a difficulty.
Other ideas for use - instead of a fruit basket, put different fruit on each tier! Old plates featuring fruit or leaves, perhaps?

I have to confess, I picked one up off the sale table in Laura Ashley the other week. I put it back down again because I have no need, but I was tempted!
I love those with non-matching plates, very nice...it's going to be hard to resist any nice ones seen in charity shops with the knowledge you can make your own fairly easily, isn't it?

Not at the moment, cos I is dieting, but we should sort something out after Christmas maybe? You're not that far away!

All I can think is why would you want to make a cake stand? You'll be making it walk next
