Mediterranean diet modelInteresting article in the New York Times supplement of the Observer last week (actually talking about the growing obesity rates in places like Greece as their diets have changed to more western tastes. )
I've put that chart up as I thought it was a great model to follow if possible, not only diet wise but probably cost wise too.
What do you think?

Seems a bit light on protein to me, but otherwise very sensible and enjoyable.

Rick Stein's programmes from last year featured a number of items about how Mediterranean farmhouse cooking was essentially driven by poverty. Lots of veg - foraged and grown, meat being the treat rather than the norm.

I think we tend to eat too much protein in the west, I'm no dietitian, but my understanding is that, in a balanced diet, only around 15% of your calories should come from protein - all of which can be had from the first group in the pyramid.

Plenty of protein in that diet... more than plenty. Non-refined grains are pretty heavy in them. And then you add in the greens and one each of the 'weekly' items per day and you're there

I was reading locatelli's book today, as a child he compared finding meat in lasagne to a nugget of gold.

Sounds like a good model. though I'd probably think about less dairy and more legumes/nuts.
Really depends whether your poultry source is good - if I couldn;t get free-range etc, I'd rather eat decent red meat weekly.

So is red meat more unhealthy than sweets?!

Less souvlakia, more baklava?

I hadn't noticed 'sweets' . Does seem a bit of an odd priority.
Baklava... mmmmm.

Don't know why, but I find that image slightly disturbing.

I think it is grossly over simplified & takes no account of how balanced an item in any particular food group is. However, I can see that, in the absence of oil power, you would get more than enough physical activity from maintaining that diet.

Oh look, a beef farmer speaks.

No, a diabetic beef farmer who isn't overweight & only eats in-season beef speaks
