Men's sock patternI want to knit my brother a pair of plain simple socks in DK yarn, but, google as I might, I can't find a suitable pattern. He's about size 11 boot, I think. Can anyone point me at a pattern or tell me how to adapt my basic size 6-ish sock-yarn (4ply?) pattern?
Cheers!

Quick rav search brings quite a few up:

Could you just add a couple of stitches to make them wider and a few extra rounds on the top and end to make them longer?

Thanks Fee - the first two use 2ply yarn and the last is so American I can't understand it . I've barely progressed from calculating yarn in grams rather than ounces, and I can't cope with yardages at all...

Ah, I did a search for DK
Have you tried searching patterns on ravelry?

American 'sport weight' is usually about the same as our dk if that helps pin down a pattern

Ah, it worked this time - first few attempts took me to a forummer general page . I'm actually a member of CL, but have never posted there...
It's not clear what size sock you end up with from those instructions - I can't measure as I go because bro is in Cambridgeshire and anyway I want them to be a surprise (and sadly I don't have any handy similar-sized men lurking around to use as model). Maybe I'll just buy him some more Corrymoor's - much easier!

do you know what size he is?
cos if you do there are guides on sock lenth you can use. handily for me - my son and himself have the same shoe size.. so i can make each try on for the other

I think he takes size 11 boots/shoes and he's a fairly well built bloke, not fat, but not skinny either IYKWIM

Are there any Size 11 Downsizers here who could measure their feet for you? - Puts out a general call to all downsizers for foot measuring!
btw did you know that your* foot is the same length as your fore-arm from inside the elbow to the base of the hand (allow about 3" of the foot length for the toes)
*Works for almost everyone.
- so could you ask your brother to measure his arm for some spurious reason? - Homework project for the kids, statistical analysis for work, or .....

I found this helpful. Just did a pair for my OH who is a size 10.5. DK on 4mm needles 54 stiches (18 on a needle) worked OK. The leg was 80 rows (they come halfway up his calf) and the foot was 40 rows (after the gusset and before doing the toes.
Any help?

Thanks Bebo (and toggle) - that looks as though it'll get me going. If I do another few rows on the foot it should come out OK for my brother. And if it doesn't, it's the thought that counts!
