Message from SeanOur ultra-reliable Mac has gone all weird. The screen keeps going all pixilated, then it says there is a problem with the computer and it needs to be closed down.
As a result Sean is incommunacado, and I will be too once I get home.
Any suggestions as to what we should do would be welcome. He has reinstated the Mac XO stuff but it hasn't helped.
On the upside, I expect a lot more progress to be made on the raised beds when I get home than would have been if he'd been able to get on-line.

could it be the connection between the monitor and the computer it'self? maybe a lead or socket

I think he tried that. He blamed me first, for downloading something dodgy, then the dog for knocking the connections.
He thinks it's a "kernel panic".

Doubt it 2steps. IIRC its an iMac with a built-in screen.
I have PM'd Jamanda.

Just in case you were missing the lad, the Mac is very poorly and has to go to the Mac doctor in Cornwall. I need to install a wireless set up so I can use my school lap top from home. This could take some time.
I think he's going to try getting to the library to use their computer at some point.

Was just wondering how he was getting on.
Hope the Mac is better soon

Thats what happens when you get these fancy bits of kit. I could have rebuilt my PC 3 times over by now....

Why do you need to use your laptop wirelessly? Most wireless laptops and routers have a LAN cable connection, well the ones I've seen do.

Yeah but he has the choice og going for a walk down the library whereas you're chained to your desk.

It's complicated. I could set up the laptop to work at home, but then I'd have to change it all back for work, it's the gateway as well as the Lan settings and apparently it invalidates the insurance. The ICT guys are being helpful, but it will take a while.

I'm glad you said that, not me!

Why doesn't he get a proper job, like most of us? Then he can steal internet time from his employer. Like most of us.

Think of Sean's machine as being a laptop with an enormous screen. (It basically is.)
There aren't many users that would have the parts or abilities to take a laptop to pieces themselves.
That said - that particular model simply clips together, and in the USA (where distances are longer) the idea was that it should be user-serviceable. Apple ran (gibbering) away from that concept with subsequent models!

Latest update - It seems that following a conversation with an Apple helpdesk person, and running diagnostic stuff under his guidance, it is the hard drive (less than 12 months old ) that has gone.
So it has to be sent back. The company will send out a new one before they get the old one, but to do that I need to enter my credit card details as security that I will actually send the old one back and I don't bring a credit card to school for obvious reasons. and I'm not too keen about putting the number on the school network anyway. I guess we'll have to do it from my Mum's at the weekend.
Why is nothing ever straightforward?
And Ben has a tummy bug and keeps throwing up every where (mostly in my Mum's car ).

I could have done it by now *if* I had another hard drive to install.

Is there ever on here? M-J is being rude and threatening to custard fight.
Have a look at the memberlist to make sure I am not welcoming spammers please, there's one on "who not to greet" thread that I am not sure about so haven't as yet. Can't delete myself, either not got the power or the knowhow, not really sure which.

England have just won a cricket match. In fact, they have won 3 since you have been offline. Perhaps you should stay away more often

Get as a 'spare' (backup) an external *Firewire* hard drive - no matter if it has usb as well - but its firewire thats important.
And I'd be astonished if the problem really is the hard drive. Anyway.

For security reasons I would try and keep the old one and insist they send a new one free, I've done it once before with a PC drive. I wasn't happy that the hard disk with personal data etc would be sent to goodness knows where. It might be worth asking.

He'll be fine thankyou Simon. I expect he's been running my Mum ragged all day today. He's looking forwards to coming to see you all too.
I'll get your parsnip seeds tomorrow.

Got the parsnip seeds. Swapped the hard drive. Still got the same problem. I shall return to the bosom of Mr Gates if I can't get this sorted out soon. Dammit.

Sure I haven't seen the thing for myself, but it really does sound as though you need an exchange 'midplane assembly' (logic board etc)under Apple's warranty extension for the particular type of fault you have indicated.
Perhaps Jamanda could print this off for you - its Apple's diagnostic routines for users to run through... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
And less blasphemy, please!
With an external (firewire) hard drive, you can backup data (and an installed working environment) really pretty easily - and that would enable you to start up and run from the external in case of disk trouble.
Push come to shove, and you could even start up a different (loaner) Mac into your own work environment.
No problem at all booting off a *firewire* external on any firewire mac, but not all will boot from usb. {Lets just gloss over questions of PPC Macs and Intel Macs - PLEASE!}
