Mid-winter celebration, mid-Wales: 21/22 NOV

Right. Where and when? I've got a smashing little village hall by here and there are several of us who would (I'm sure) be happy to put people up...
earthyvirgo

Is this weekend a bit too early? Smile

EV

We must arrange 'the other thing' too Mochyn.

Sadly this weekend is Ludlow food & drink fest: we'll be up to our ears in a guest and lots of food and drink...

Yes: 'the other' is becoming more urgent... (Behave, NL). Especially if you want knitting done in time for mid-winter.
Cathryn

Great and I'll help with whatever needs doing. Smile

The word 'sadly' and food and drink fest surely shouldn't appear in the same sentence ? Smile

I have fond recollections of eating lots of different puddings in a church in Ludlow a couple of years ago at the foot fest.

Will organise a date with you for 't'other thing' in the next couple of weeks. I just want to finish off all frames and prep for the exhibition in Oct, then I can take a tiny breather before seriously getting on with work for the next.

Will pm you with days to see when suits you.

Ooops.
No, I didn't know Ludlow had a foot festival either ...

That should have been FOOD, as you might have guessed Smile

EV
Fee

We'll be up for that methinks, you thinking November-time? Can't do first weekend in December, that's it right now though, until the Christmas party invites come flooding in of course Wink
Chez

Us please!
Cathryn

Hmm, do we allow those who've emigrated over the border? Wink
mochyn

By hte way: thanks to the sticky fairy!

I'll give this a few more days for more folk to jump in, then I can book the hall (it takes up to 60 people sitting down) for the last weekend in November unless I hear otherwise...
welsh veg grower

sure we will join in too, if thats ok
mochyn

What I'm thinking is a bring and share: you bring it, we'll share it! Small financial contributions for hire of the hall. I can get it for the Saturday and Sunday if that sounds like a good idea. The hall has a main room, good kitchen and loos. Too small for dancing (sadly) but it's very comfortable.

We can be more formal about who brings what if people like, a la last year's Earwig Convention. We'll see as we get nearer the date.

I'll provisionally book it, shall I?
Cathryn

Yep. Smile
mochyn

Quick change to the weekend before that: the last weekend is Ludlow Medieval Fair which we never miss...

Unless anyone has any better ideas...

Wot am i probably missing? Where (does it say Embarassed )? Um...
Fee

Not sure we can make it that weekend Sad It's a joint 31st/1st birthday weekend of a good friend and their little boy. Won't rule it out though, will see what's going on with them.
Jamanda

I'll make sure the SW one is a different weekend. So maybe you can make that.

Oooh, didn't realise there would be more than one on offer Very Happy

Go back to page 1 of this thread!

Every year, some time in Nov/Dec, we have a Welsh DS get-together. First few years it was in Aberystwyth, last year Y Ferwig, this year it's our turn! Between Llanfair Ceareinion and Llanfyllin.
Chez

Please can someone put us up?

No.

That's a shame - you are a name I don't have a face for yet!

Silas wrote:

Won't anyone have you in their clique then, Silas? Or is it the Grouch Marx idea (I don't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member...)

Don't worry, you can join ours if you like and you promise to play nicely.
Chez

Shouldn't that be 'Groucho'? Wink
Silas

Nah, she was right first time...
sally_in_wales

I don't think I can come along, I'm pretty sure I'd doing a show that weekend. Oh well, I'll have to come and pester some of you individually at other times instead.
mochyn

Sally: it won't be the same without you. Crying or Very sad

That's the biggest problem with this sort of thing: there's never a date that suits everyone.

And Silas & Chez: you're both right!
mochyn

Why've we got a square sticky thing when the SW have got a splodge one?

Wales demands splodges!

Can I raise a tentative hand and say that me and Mr Woodsprite would like to come to please?

Well, Mr Sprite is coming here soon, isn't he? If you haven't definitely confirmed by then (is there any other confirmation?) I'll hold him hostage.

Can you add me to your List?! Very Happy
welsh veg grower

can we add our one little person (well hardly little he is 10) however there is a but as we know we are moving into our new home sometime in November (likely to be a weekend) but we dont know which.

Just keep me infomred of the plans and once i know our date I will confirm with you. But sure we could manage an afternoon or something even if we are moving.
bring me sunshine

Can you add my OH and I as potentials ... we'll be on 6 day weeks at work by then, but if the date coincides with (a) a mutual day off and (b) peace and tranquillity amongst the four leggers, we'd like to come.

That'll be the "little village hall by me" then....should be easy to find Wink . Perhaps the thread could be renamed with venue and date for those of us well versed in driving half way round Wales looking for venues. And who knows, might even get there Very Happy

I thought all you had to do was tell someone, somewhere (doesn't matter who or where), and within 3 days everyone would know and all you'd have to do is ask someone else somewhere else (they're probably related anyway).
mochyn

I'll pm location details to all those who've 'singned up' nearer the date.

Now, who's got ideas for what to do/eat?

It could be highly amusing, though. And bets could be taken.
On second thoughts, however, it may have to be the usual naked accordian combo...

I see trying to be up there with those "secret venue" festivals are we...? Put me down as a possible (no idea what time the U-13 match will be on the Sunday or other things at this stage...) with somewhere between 1 and 4 others. The other others being away at uni. Helpful Very Happy .

And SO would like something to do with bees. Probably on Saturday. Probably lots to do with bees.
mochyn

Anyone fancy adding some crafty stufff on one of the days? We have the hall for both, so maybe textiley things on the Sat. day time to make decs to jazz the place up for the evening?

Just a thought...
welsh veg grower

yep a bit of craft for adults and kids would be great, and some food, did anyone already say food Very Happy

I may be able to do some craft with the kids - what ages do we have? Long time since I did or taught any craft but I will give it a go.
mochyn

I think there are a few kids of all ages. I'll start thinking about food a little nearer the date unless anyone wants to offer a speciality.

How far from mine then Mochyn?

I'll have a spare double room and a futon and sofa if anyone needs bed space.
And a camper van if anyones desperate.

Debbie: the hall is about an hour from you. nearer than where Chez used to live, though!
Chez

Not much! Laughing

Arvo has just had some work pencilled and then cancelled for that weekend - I'm VERY relieved! Laughing

I'm near Aberdare, very close to Sally-in-wales but getting lifts can be tricky as I have a four-year-old Sherbling who would probably have to go too. I'm hoping that after Christmas I will be mobile again so we can start going to some of these things.
mochyn

So: do people want to do some decoration-making during the Saturday? There can be cooking going on in the kitchen at the same time, if anyone needs to do that. We could pack up the crafts about 4 and set up for the evening...

Of course there could be food ongoing throughout the day.

And on the Sunday.
mochyn

BUMP.

So, what do people want to do during the Saturday? And can we please have suggestions for food/drink?
judith

What cooking facilities are there at the hall?
earthyvirgo

Would you like me to bring (it reheats just fine) or make a chickpea curry ... I'm still a better veggie cook that a meat one and it's not too blatantly veggie for hardened meat eaters.

EV
gz

reheat- tastes even better Laughing
mochyn

There's a good kitchen: fridge, cooker (electric), crockery, cutlery, heated trolleys...

if there's anything anyone would like to use just ask: we may have it! I'll check when I'm there this evening what we have.

And chickpea curry sounds perfect.

I can do carnivorous chilli and perhaps bring some wine, depending on whether it tastes like paint stripper when I try it next week or not.

Cool We have ways...

We were discussing getting a couple of polypins from, say Salopian Breweries too...

An idea that seemed popular yesterday was community singing of festive songs. And decorating cupcakes for the smaller people, perhaps...
bring me sunshine

I'm little! I definitely can't make the Saturday so pen me in as a maybe for the Sunday. With the OH away, I'm stuck doing all the chores and jobs, which is a lot more time consuming than I thought it would be Confused
Cathryn

We'll have some of our own hoggett by then does anyone want me to bring it early on Saturday for any of these dishes? Or are you all bringng them ready made?

Not in the spirit of downsizer but we appear to be likely to end up with too much food... Should we be very organised (yes I know there are other words for that Wink ) and have some idea of how much each dish will serve so that we don't end up with excess?

I think I would like to make something very pretty for the top of my Christmas tree which might involve Mochyn threading needles. It could also include crochet for others, something that the children coudl do as well, dunno, shall we keep pooling ideas?

I'm now goling to stop work and surf the net for inspiration. Rolling Eyes
mochyn

We were thinking making basic decorations in the hall on the Saturday morning, while other people do creative food things in the kitchen, then putting the decorations up in the hall. Their makers can take them home on the Sunday.

I think most food is being brung ready-cooked, but some hogget would be lovely.

Sunday I was hoping would be a good eating-up day to deal with leftovers.

I'll make a few loaves in advance.

Actually, I wouldn't mind some of that hogget...
