Milk cartons as plant pots

Is there any reason why empty milk cartons shouldn't be re-used to start seedlings off in? You know, the foil lined types. We get through loads of these and they all go to the recycling but I was stuck for pots when potting up my tomatos yesterday and wondered if I could use these. Cut the tops off, rinse them out and make a few holes in the bottom. Being square they would then stack neatly into a box to keep them upright.

Would the metalic inner affect the plants though?[/u]

I've used 'em. The only down side is that they get a bit gooey as water leaches in to the inner cardoard; the outside and inside are waterproof, but the cut surface is not. As a consequence you get one use out of them (or, I got one use out of them) before they're useless. Better option may be to just recycle them and scavenge free pots elsewhere.

I was only planning on single use. recycle them after planting out. I can't find ordinary plantpots here although a friend of ours happened to be in Limoges when they were plating up the city flower beds and got and got a million out of the skip, lucky so&so. Gotta be in the right place at the right time I s'ppose.

Anyway thanks, I'll try them.

I've used yoghurt before pots but they are a bit small. And why are flower pots so hard to buy in Fance? I did find some in Jardi Leclerc but they were extremely expensive.

The French are heavily into recycling and buy all there milk in cartons? Wink That's France. Confused

Well here goes. First batch of toms under way. We'll se how they do.

Tres bon! Very efficient use of space, I think I might try that for leeks (and other things too) as seed trays are a bit shallow and run out of nutrients too fast.

Another use could be to open them out and use as reflectors to help stop seedlings getting leggy.
