Very Happy
wellington womble

There, Frewen. You don't need an embelisher, you need a mule. Where are you going to keep it? Wink
Frewen

I did request a gelding as there was plenty enough space in the grounds of the summer school to ride it around...

...they couldn't find me one in time though Laughing

There is an "alternative" felt making module in the C&G (she starts wondering Wink )
marigold

So when are we going to see some piccies of what you were up to last week Frewen? Very Happy
Frewen

When I can either get the images off my phone or take some decent pictures Embarassed

I will try again today - I made a couple of samples, a nuno wrap, a bag and a vessel Very Happy (I don't like the vessel much but it met the requirements).
Cathryn

At last a use for my horse. Save all that rolling and sloshing aound in soap.
marigold

There's something about the word vessel that makes me squirm Shocked . I've no idea why, but in in textile terms it always strikes me as wrong - in my mind a vessel should either float on water or be able to contain liquid, so it "can't" be made out of fabric Confused . Many textile artists would disagree with me though Wink .

I'm looking forward to the pictures...
Frewen

I am not overly fond of the word either - what I made is an architectural "bowl" to my mind (whatever you call it - it's still horrible Laughing )
Jamanda

What's a nuno wrap?
marigold

I think nuno is a sort of felt where you bash fibres into a woven fabric background, and a wrap is a shawl in old-speak Very Happy
Frewen

Nuno felt - as Marigold says, is where the fibres are encouraged through the weave of a piece of fabric. When the fibres felt they pucker the fabric up.

It's lightweight and drapey but very strong Very Happy

Polly Stirling is the Nuno queen (nuno means tissue of fabric in japanese I believe).

It can shrink quite dramatically - sometimes up to 50% which makes laying out large pieces a bit tricky!

There's some lovely Nuno out there - just google to look at the pretty pictures (like anyone needs another time-sucker on here!)
Frewen

Here's Nuno

As in: nuno nuno nuno nuno BATMAN....? Wink

I have broad shoulders Laughing
Frewen

This is what I made - and I don't like it - but I had to do it to prove technical "skill".

My tutor was awesome incidentally Cool

Front and back of clutch purse

Vessel/architechtural bowl

Cathryn

I like the bottom one and they both look well made and finished.
Frewen

I hate them both Sad

edited to say - there's nothing wrong with them technically... they just don't "jump" out at me Embarassed

Thank heavens for that. Though they look as though they're quite difficult to have done which is presumably the point of the exercise.
Frewen

The wrap was the thing I really wanted to do - and I had lots of people looking and asking questions at the open workshop.

The other stuff is for the C&G - although I plan to redesign and reshow at the end Wink
Cathryn

Is the whole course going to be like this. Would be awful. Remember my Art A level having to do things that just didn't inspire me just to pass the exam.
Jamanda

Is there a photo of the nuno thing?
Frewen

Here's a up close - the wrap is on page one (although hung on a mens hanger which makes it look rather broad)

excuse the flash - it blanches the silk in some places Embarassed
Jamanda

That's pretty. Can you wear it?
Frewen

Yes - either as a shawl, or of I embellish it and cut armholes, as a loose unstructured shrug Smile
marigold

Mmm. I rather like the vessel/bowl... and it looks beautifully made. Love the shrug too Very Happy . Not sure about the purse, but again it looks beautifully made. My inner embroiderer has ideas about embellishing the shrug.... In a totally tasteful way, of course. I'm not a fan of embellishment for the sake of it Wink .

I like the vessel too - I'm sure I could find space for it here Smile

I've felted bowls, but I knit then felt, so you don't have the same level of control over them.

I'm aware of the process of felting and have known 'professional' felters (I've worked in a contemporary crafts gallery), so I'm aware of the work that goes into 'proper' felt (and that's the bit that doesn't appeal!)

I'll needle felt embellishment onto felted knitted items - again, needle felting can take ages, so I don't do a huge amount from scratch either (that and I'm rather accident prone and have had a needle felting needle go into my finger, really not pleasant with those barbs!)

However, seeing your pieces reminded me that I've been planning to make a decorative felted sun for ages (it was supposed to be for midsummer) so I've started it now and what with everything else I need to get done, I might have it finished by next midsummer Wink
Frewen

You will post pictures won't you Very Happy I love looking at other people's work.

I've posted a pic of a felted bowl on Ravelry, although it could do with a shave and some embellishment - it's very simple, an absolute no brainer to make really - but a good stash buster, handy for keeping small odds and ends of yarn (that I'm currently using up making the little dolls).

I've started on the sun. It'll be two crocheted circles (spiralled) with triangles sandwiched inbetween. I'm currently trying to decide whether to join and then felt (leaving a hole to stuff) or to felt in separate pieces and then sew.

Anyway, the plan once felted is to needle felt oranges into the main body of the sun, beaded blanket stitch around the edges and probably some beading to the main body of the sun to catch the light.

If it works I think I might make some little stars to hang on the tree for Yule.

I've seen some nice miniature knitted sock patterns out there to make mini hanging stockings with too (another good use for any odds and ends of yarn people may have left over - I will reduce my stash eventually!)
