More than one domain name

I am currently looking at my marketing as we have brought another boat to hire out. I have searched on WHIOS and have found a few domain names that explain better what we do here at the marina, I intend to link them to our current website and change our homepage to the hire page and expand on the info it has. Does anyone else do this?

Cheers Pea

It's quite a common thing to do. We've just set up a tourism and heritage web site where there are about 30 domains. Some pointing to the home page and others pointing to pages within the site.

The one that annoys me most is the Kintaline Poultry people ... you search for *anything* poultry related and it points to them. It's very annoying, particularly as their website isn't terribly well laid out.

We have got four domains that are available and will suit us well. We can now up our marketing budget with having the two boats and the day boat, the website will be changed as well. We have briefly spoken to our web chappie, he is great and only lives the other side of town.

Check out your web site in IE8 or Chrome.

Sorry should have explained. If you view http://www.limefarmmarina.co.uk/ in either IE8 or Chrome the menus aren't as they should be.

Here are some ideas...

Domains

Imagine you sell clay bricks but your business name is "A.B.C Holdings".

Your domain name should be "claybricks.co.uk" or similar rather than "abcholdings.co.uk" (although I'd register that as well and point it at your main site).

If the .com is available as well get it.

You can buy other domains to point to content within your site if you wish but it is actually "spreading" your content (I'll explain later).

Don't bother.

Content

If you have good content then you will get visitors. Why? Google (the only search engine that matters) marks up "unique" content within their PageRank algorithm (that's what decides where your site ends up when users search for keywords).

The GoogleBot crawls your site and can tell whether you have copied and pasted copy from their sites it has previously crawled. ieBasically I'm saying ... write your own. Even if it takes ages and is a pain in the butt.

Keywords

Make sure that the text you use has a good but not too high scattering of your key words. e.g. :

BAD

Clay bricks, our clay bricks are the clayiest clay brick on the clay brick brick market today.

GOOD

Claybicks.com provide all the clay brick solutions you need. If you are looking for clay type bricks for your...

Get it?

And finally for now (i'm tired)....

This is where having 20 or so domain names can diminish the quality of your content "spreading" (according to your PR)....

If you have written good copy for your main site you could be diminishing it by linking to deeper content via other domains.

I personally would put a lot of effort into marketing your main URL.

Next week Adsense and Adwords for beginners....

Hope this helps... At the end of the day SEO is a dark art.
