Moving images

Some people hate em others love em, should we allow animated images in avatars?

We've had this discussion internally and haven't been able to reach a resolution so it's up to you, the people...

Amongst the reasons (I've been given) against are:

Annoying
Painful
Distracting
Bad if you're on dial up
Fee

I said no, because although I have nothing against animated avatars as such, some people just have no taste Laughing
Mrs Fiddlesticks

I've said no as I find them a distraction.
Northern_Lad

Can we split it, please?

I'm not really fussed about the avatars, but having them in sigs is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly annoying.
Penny

Could we change teh poll just to avatars, we already have a rule for sigs.
Marionb

I've said no because they are distracting - however if someone has a moving avatar I just press the esc button and it stops moving - until I refresh the page or look in a different thread when I have to do it again if necessary.
Azura Skye

I don't like moving sigs, banners or avatars. So distracting and headache enducing !
boisdevie1

They are distracting. Just because you can do things with technology it doesn't necessarily follow that those 'things' are worth doing.
hedgewitch

I've voted no. On grounds of taste. Wink
marigold

In general I'd say no 'cos moving images are irritating esecially if I'm migrainous, but I do lerrrve Tay's avatar....
hardworkinghippy

I was so relieved when I saw the poll result that I'm not the only one who finds them too "flashy".

I come in here for a rest from all that bells and whistles stuff. Cool

One rule for all....
Simon

Couldn't you make your wind-turbines move?

Oh, no we won't be allowed. Laughing
hardworkinghippy

Simon, I made a short video of these for my blog and it came out as a minute of blurry semi-stationary cheapo windcharger with what sounded like wind sound effects in the background... Neutral

Would be nice though for an avatar ! but as I don't approve of that sort of thing...humph

Mr. Green
Jamanda

I said no, because although the few we have on here don't bother me too much (apart from that flying saucer of Ruby's that made me feel sick), if I stumble on to a forum where everyone has them I can't stand it.
RoryD

Yes, because it really does not bother me, its not a big problem, and its feels a big un-Downsizery to be banning things.

Very Happy
Nick

I voted yes, because I'm young, tolerant and don't mind things.
woodsprite

I said no too, sorry.
I can't look at Tays avatar, I think its yucky.
RoryD

Blimey if Nicks claiming young then I will too. So what I said, and because I'm young. And virile.

Still thinking of Denise Lewis (was that her name?) eh?
bingo

It doesn't bother me.

I think Jamanda has a good point though, if everybody had one it would be a bit hectic.

I agree with RoryD though, seems a bit conservative for Downsizer to restrict members in such a way.

I myself am quite happy with my clown at the momment, so neither care nor not care wether they stay or not. Neutral
mochyn

I've gone for no, but only because I'm a dial-up type. Don't mind otherwise, though.
tahir

Maggie's my middle name Wink

I only brought it up because members have had issues with them, we couldn't agree the best course of action hence this topic
Frewen

I've voted no - even though I've used them in the past Embarassed . I think too many would be distracting.

Well I am now.
MarkS

press <ESC> and they stop - is that so difficult?

How is it that men always seem to bring any discussion back down to the subject of their virility and general manliness? Rolling Eyes

That aside, I don't mind one way or another...about moving avatars that is - not the manliness issue.
hedgewitch

Didn't know that. If that's all it takes, can I go back and change my vote? Rolling Eyes Laughing
alisjs

they really don't bother me.......and neither do those animated emoticons (no-one mentioned them yet did they?)
Barefoot Andrew

I voted yes - fail to see what the fuss is about.
A.

Oooh, they're different, I like those Laughing
Fee

Think it's a good point about a ban being un-downsizery though.

Think of it more as a mutual agreement to not do something that p*sses off a lot of people. Very Happy
Fee

Ah, that's better Very Happy

Plus you have a well heeled sense of irony.
RoryD

Maybe its something that is best managed by good old English snobbery. I for one find them terribly gauche and akin to flaunting a personalised numberplate.
james_so

No. They are a waste of resources Wink

And I hate having to sit forward to press ESC..
dougal

Useful tip about pressing ESC to stop the things.

Irony can go too far...
Nick

Duly noted! Wink
Andy B

Dont mind, did find Nick's one funny though!!
LynneA

Thought Nick's was great too. Was even thinking about starting a thread saying so.

It's animations and music that I don't like.
Becki

A few others have them on there, not just Nick. Are they allowed or not?
hedgewitch

Now I know I can stop them with the escape button, I'm happy for people to use them Wink
Jamanda

Where did you get it from Nick? I was meaning to show Ben it.
Mary-Jane

So is it a two-answer poll so I can't click on the "I don't mind one way or the other" option? Neutral
Cathryn

It's nearly a new year perhaps we should all change? (Cab's back now isn't he? Wink Smile )

Tay

I only just noticed this thread as I rarely look at this section of DS. I'll get rid of mine now; I found it amusing (but I do have a slightly different sense of humour to most people...), and had no intention of causing offence. Sorry.
Cathryn

Did you? Nick's made me feel slightly sick because of the way it whizzed in and out, yours just is sick. Smile Ahh live and let live everyone. What an odd thing to get upset about. Smile
Becki

I didn't realise anyone did get upset???

I thought it was great, reminded me a lot of of my life in IT. Laughing
Cathryn

Put it back Tay. It is so you. Smile

Me too Laughing . Mostly I find moving avatars a bit irritating, but I'd be happy to see Tay's back...
Tay

I have no idea where I found it! I could spend time browsing for it, or I could get on with maths revision... Shocked

Anyhow, New Year, new avatar. I have another in mind, but I'll have to wait a while to get it. Cool
Treacodactyl

A google for avatar_1218.gif finds it.
Tay

Thanks. It does help if you know where to look for it. Wink so, back by popular demand, frustrated techie has returned. But it won't be around for long...

alison

Becki
