moving stuff to a new machine.I am seriously considering upgrading my laptop, BUT one of the things putting me off is all the hassle of reloading software and transferring files and settings.
Is there an easy way of moving all the stuff on my current machine across to new one. I am thinking particularly about email settings, adress books and message files, things like favourites, and so on. Actual file data I am guessing I can just copy on to an external hard drive and then move across.
Any easy answers?

You could create a backup image of the old drive and transfer the whole thing, lock stock and barrel.
Probably not what you want to do though.
It is almost what I'd like to do, except I'd like a way to leave all the accumulated dross behind.
To answer your question, yes, there is a fairly easy way to transfer the settings, but I forget how...
Might be in the help files?

On Vista I'm sure there's an app that says it'll copy everything from an old Windows PC. I've never used it though as I've only setup Vista PCs for people who's old PC has failed and I've had to rescue files from the old one.

There is a utility you can buy that takes applications as well as data across:

I seem to recall it worked for me many many moons ago.

You can get untills to do it & vista has one built in.
BUT
You will still need to install all your progs.
(ah I see from Jema's post that have sorted that now)
Oh & doing a drive image can lead to problems as the new pc wont have the same devices as the old one. To do it that way you need to start in safe mode & un install all the device drivers, then image then move drive image then start new pc then let it load all the drivers. then curse cos its stuck lol.
