Mulberry cuttingsHas anybody ever taken cutting from a mulberry tree? My ex husband has a rather lovely tree in his garden that he cut back last year and I've been eying up the new shoots, twitching to cut them off and turn them into baby trees.... Can't decide whether to try semi ripe or hardwood cuttings or both....

Could you do some of both as an experiment and let us know?

Try both, it's supposed to be very easy

According to the RHS softwood cuttings in the summer or seed in the autumn/winter.
I imagine they will need some bottom heat.

The recommended technique of doing hardwood cuttings outdoors
in the dormant season doesn't work. I've tried several ways and
the next approach is semi-ripe with bottom heat and plastic
covering. A look at the price most nurseries charge will tell you
these are not easy things to root and grow on, but then, if you've
got the material to make plenty of cuttings then why not try.

An excellent reminder. Thanks.
We planted a James I Mulberry to mark the Millennium and Mr Wingy & I were discussing taking cuttings not that long ago actually. I shall be taking a ton of cuttings this week as we'd like to plant several more on our property. If they take well and I end up with a hoard of them, the surplus will be up for grabs. I'll keep you posted.
