I found what I'm 99% confident was The Blusher today, a really meaty one. I see them all the time but haven't got the confidence to eat one. Best to be sure.

Are they worth it?
Stewy

We need to see some of this Bingo

I've not eaten a Blusher either, don't fancy any of the Amanitas to be honest.

PeteS

Got a perfect little Cep today. Just one I know but in tip-top condition and NO maggots at all. However, where are all the Bay Boletes? Also remember that there is a new moon on the 11th Oct.

Jamanda

Here comes the rain..... Pouring here this morning.
bingo

Here to, great I hope it rains all day.
skedone

it still raining my end hows it your end
PeteS

Yes, it is still chucking it down here Smile

Looking at the long range forecast after this bit of rain the weather will warm up (Friday is predicted to reach 20degC). Then it slowly cools down. The good thing is that there is NO predicted frost. The bad thing is that there is no real rain until the 20-21st Oct. Of course these forecast are almost always wrong - yesterday there was no rain until the end of the month, which is as far as these forecasts go.
Stewy

Been raining all day here too, wheres Cab?
Stewy

Just drove past half a dozen or so Shaggy Inkcaps, things could be looking up.
jp

Its been bucketing down here all day - keep your fingers crossed...
ksia

Not much happening here either. But we've had some rain showers so partner is looking in the forest on way home tonight - keep your fingers crossed!
Stewy

Any of you New Forset shroomers ever bumped into Mrs Tee?

http://www.wildmushrooms.co.uk/index.htm
bingo

Yes.
Stewy

Did she give you the evils Bingo? Laughing

Just noticed her Cep prices (although 2004) £6 for 125g! Shocked
bingo

PM coming your way Stewy.
Stewy

Do you get many "foreign" gangs picking in the forest?
PeteS

I have never bumped into Mrs Tee or any of her pickers. I have never seen any gangs (foreign or otherwise) picking mushrooms. In fact apart from Bingo the only person that I have seen picking mushrooms was a Polish guy a few weekends ago. Last year I saw NO-ONE else. I am sure that commercial gangs do exist (I think Bingo has seen some) but most would need some form of transport and they probably would not venture far from a road. I also now tend to go out early, sometimes as the sun comes up - not many people out then. However, during the summer I had a reliable patch of Chanterelles right next to a road (you could see them from the car) and you can't get any more obvious than that. Even so, I was the only one picking them.

Peter Jordan runs forays in the forest too, seen him Bingo?

Well as you well know if it hasn't got a great big stem it's not a parasol and looks to dense and heavy any how.

So yes I would say it was the Prince. Probably (covers himself). Rolling Eyes

Stewy, I have seen teams of pickers on two occasions.

One time, was a team of French guys near Bartley. They had driven a VW campervan right into the forest Shocked Surprised and where picking mushrooms and filling the van up, how they didn't get caught by the Forestry, I don't know. Maybe they did.

The second time, a group of middle aged English folk with landrovers all pulled up at a spot bettween Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst where there are signs to say no picking. Obviously because it's a great place for mushrooms. They were doing the same as the French guys, filling up the back of their LR's where they had big industrial containers for mushrooms. They were the rel deal, they knew exactly where to go and what they were doing.
bingo

I've seen a few Polish people picking mushrooms in my spots too. Twisted Evil
jp

Bumped into a French chap earlier this year looking for Chanterelles in the Forest, but he is the only one I've seen.

Are they picking for money, or because foraging is more widespread in Poland and other European countires, and they're just doing what is pretty normal at home, i.e. to eat themselves ?
bingo

I expect most of the Polish people are picking for themselves.
Stewy

I'll be having a mooch tomorrow so will report back.
PeteS

Yes, I get that impression too.
Jamanda

I think I found a patch of porcelain mushrooms. Very white, almost translucent at the edges. Very slimy and sticky on the top. Thin stems. Growing on a bit of dead wood in a beech wood.

Someone recently was saying they were good I think?

I also found some clouded funnels (I think) any opinions on these?
mushroom man

I'm always saying how good the Porcelain Fungus is. I never believed it myself until I met a couple picking baskets of them not so long ago. The sliminess doesn't entirely disappear with cooking but the flavour is very rich indeed. They cannot be mixed up with anything nasty either.
Jamanda

Thanks. How would you recommend they are cooked?
Jamanda

By the time I got back this afternoon some other b$%^^&r had had them Sad
mushroom man

The stems are far too tough so nip them off. The caps could do with a good rinsing but the slime never goes away completely. Apart from that they can be treated like anything else and the certainly sauté very well.

I had some today - very nice.
Jamanda

I'm going to go and investigate those woods better tomorrow.
I did notice that even though I'd washed the slime off as it had bits stuck to it, prior to making a spore print, it was very slimy again a few hours later.
PeteS

Yes, I noticed this. I think it is best to remove the slime just before you cook them, but I am no Porcelain fungus expert!
PeteS

Rain forecast for Tuesday, but then it gets cold for a few days. On Friday the forecast has temps down to 0 to -1degC in the midlands and Wales and 3 to 5degC in the south. This is not good Sad
bingo

Just as things are starting to look up out there, I found some stuff today.
Will post pictures later.
PeteS

I got a nice Parsol mushroom this morning while walking the dog.

I just hope that the forecast is wrong but it doesn't look good.
Stewy

My 4 year old nephew has gone Super Mario mad so I ordered this for him from Hong Kong for Christmas and it came today, it's cool so I've ordered another one for me. Very Happy

Jamanda

We always keep a look out for Mario mushrooms when we go out. Have drummed in that they are definitely NOT edible!
