Mushroom help?

I have been looking through the edible gallery, but it is taking forever on dial up. Can someone identify these and let me know whether they are edible please. They are growing around the dead trunk of a walnut tree.

Hi. Since you're in France I'll recommend "Guide Vigot des champignons comestible et de leurs sosies toxiques" which is my constant companion.

I'd never give a positive id over the internet, but flicking through said book I can't see any like 'em - so I'd say chuck 'em. Though hopefully some of Downsizer's resident mushie experts (mushsperts?) will be able to help you some more ....

Thanks....we will not be picking unless someone recognises them. Thanks for the tip...I have a book somewhere, just can't find it Confused

Honey Fungus Armillaria mellea

Confused Every image of Honey Fungus I Google, looks different to my images?

Okay, thanks...looking back in the Edible Gallery I can see that they are most definitely Honey Fungus. I don't think we'll eat them, as they don't sound like they are worth the risk of stomach upset.

Thanks Stewy. My book has 'em (I agree with Nanny, the pix I've got aren't quite the same) as borderline eatable - poisonous raw, bad reactions in some people even when cooked. What's your opinion?

Never eaten them I'm afraid so can't comment.

I have eaten them and I think they are really nice. Underrated in my view, but probably not one for the beginner to try. The Italians like them too and you can see them on sale in the markets - goes great with pasta.

Ohhh... the are just starting in the UK too. There was loads out at the weekend. The other good thing about Honey Fungus is that it often grows in great numbers. In fact it's possible to fill your basket from one patch.

Oysters fruiting again Pete?
PeteS

Hello Stewy,

Yes, Oysters are fruiting, although I only picked a few - there were loads of Hedgehog mushrooms about and I got a basket full.

Have you heard from Tedlet? (Stewy will understand).

No, he seems a bit shy! Laughing

Missed the Oysters Pete, they were on the "turn" if that makes sense?

Will they fruit again this year do you reckon? I couldn't see any young 'uns coming.
