Mushrooms for the Weekend

Got a basket full (well a cloth sack full) of mushrooms on Friday lunchtime. I did not have my basket with me and was rushing around a bit as I am supposed to only have an hour, well it turned out to be 1.5 hours. There are still plenty of Wood Blewits and I noticed some small ones just coming up too. Also found a huge stack of Oyster mushroom (Bingo knows where that tree is) and a few Shaggy Parasols.

Pick those Oysters before they're knackered Pete.

Or I get there. Laughing

I picked a few after this picture was taken. The thing that got me is that I went past this tree on Tuesday and there was nothing there then, so they have got to this stage in just 3 days!

I don't tend to like Oyster mushrooms when they are this big - I find the texture a bit tough for my liking. However, the taste is good and I have found that you can make a really nice mushroom pate with them.

While walking the dog in the pooring rain on Saturday I noticed a few Chanterelles. Ok only a few and far to0 wet to pick but there could well be something worth while later in the week. I also spotted the odd Hedgehog mushroom too.

I wonder if any of my patches have had a late start?

Only one way to find out, I'm too busy to get out there though.

Well, there is certainly a lot of water in the New Forest. I got covered in mud at the weekend. If only we'd had this rain two months ago. In fact it is now wetter than the 'summer'.

I might get the chance to take a quick look. The forcast has it back to cold and dry for the rest of this week. Might well be frosty too. Not good for most mushrooms apart from Blewits and Oysters but I think conditions could be good for some Christmas Blewits. Mind you, I am starting to get bored of Blewits!

I had another look at my Blewit spot at lunctime and there are loads more fruiting since Friday. It is definately ideal for them this season.

One other thing about those Oyster mushrooms. I can remember this same tree fruiting in a similar fashion at about the same time last season. I sent a post about it to this forum and looking back I noticed that last year I found them on the 11th December - almost a year to the day - amazing!

That is weird given we've had different weather this year, will be interesting to see what happens a year from now.

That's the thing with mushrooms, you learn to become very patient as any info takes at least a year.
