Mushrooms growing in my mint Barrel!!! Why and what?

Evening all,

I chopped back my mint a few months ago as it was looking rather tatty. Yesterday I noticed mushrooms growing in the compost. I'm not sure why that is. The compost was brand new, and not recycled mushroom compost, and I don't have mushrooms elsewhere.

Anyway, could anyone help me identify them? Are they edible, do they need to grow bigger? How did they get there? Any information would be appreciated.

The pictures are in the link below.

Thanks all!!

Does the compost contain wood chip or other wood products in it's manufacture? We've used a peat free compost that was mainly based on rotted wood chips and they often had a flush of fungi. No idea what they are though.

Ah I see. Then my smile was inappropriate. How about an Sad instead?

Wink (that one was for you, unless the picture IS of you. Then I default back to an Sad and apologise for my second mistake).

Hmmm...not sure. I just remember it was a bag of bought garden centre compost, rather than some home-made affair, so I was assuming that it would be sterile. I also don't recall any mushrooms growing in it last year. I think I potted it up summer before last.

I can't imagine me buying a peat free compost....a couple of years ago I just bought any old stuff...probably the cheapest...lol. Shame I didn't keep the bag. That might have helped. Interesting thought though. Maybe it is woodchip based.

Hi there,

Yeah, a few days ago I was repotting some stuff, and after cutting back my mint I tend to use that barrel to rest on. So some bits a pieces fall onto the top of the compost. The woodchips are from a bay tree I was repotting. But the mushies were growing before I dropped the woodchips onto the compost.

I think this might be Agrocybe aegerita again. It is a very variable species but the wood chip habitat is fairly typical.

Thanks MM. By variable I assume you mean in terms of looks. I Googled "Agrocybe aegerita" and no two seem to look alike...lol. But I did find a photo of some that looked similar.

Fourth picture down.....
