You are very naughty posting those fantastic pictures.
We kept a shire twenty years ago and you have just helped to rekindle a fire that has been dormant but still smouldering ever since.

Thank you bodger. These boys are the loves of my life
I expect it's in your blood now. Yesterday gil challenged me to post pics and start a shire thread, so lets talk shire. I must admit I have got a lot to do outside with them at the moment, but,I'll be back...

they're OK I suppose if I *had* to have any horse, it would be a shire - the shires I've ridden were the best of all I ever have. had some hairy moments on the high street in town breaking a two-year-old once but apart from that they were eager to please and responsive, aswell as being nice to look at I rode the biggest shire in lancashire once - people really got out of your way on him!

Shires are the most awesome creatures, they never cease to amaze me, such strenght and so gentle all at the same time. Never owned one but always admired and respected them and those that care for them.

Thanks so much for posting, goosey.
I really like working horses, even though I'm not a horsey person.
Do you plough or log with them ? Or something else ?

Thank you very much indeed all, for your kind words.
bodger, your girl looks very like the boys, I can see why the pics stirred you. She was one of the family.

as you're talking shires and after seeing your gorgeous boys i thought you might like to see my mare who i drive.
I have also JUST got back from buying what i hope to be the other half of a matched pair of steel greys ... but this is Rosie - her mum was Dolly a pure bred shire and her sire was a USA reg racehorse named Yatchsman.
you cna see the real shire butt on this pic
as you can see this is Rosies shire mum
and her TB dad, shes got almost perfect confirmation and for a cross its pretty impressive if i do say so myself ..and i do
So what do you drive goosey, cart, carriage, dray, plough?
ETA ... aha dray work .. just read the last bit of your other post *doh*

i need my eyes testing from your avatar i thought the pic was of a friesian cow ... but shes lovely, and do you drive or plan to drive her?

My eyes are going too. Just wait until I tell Bella that you though she was a cow.
We've had Bella for about 15 years now and you can just about do anything with her. She's our family cob and apart from riding her, on a summers day you can simply lie on her back and sunbathe.

I can't keep up, what great pics! Grange, I think you've got the best of both words with Rosie, her TB sire is a handsome horse. You're lucky to know both her parents, often people don't. I would like to see pics of your mothers horses. One of my shires was bred in Derbyshire, it would be funny if they were all related. Do you compete with her or just have fun driving locally. She's lovely.

And I thought I had bad eyesight Bella is a sturdy looking horse, and great for a cuddle Maybe she could help bring back those logs for the woodstore. Thanks so much for posting her, she's terrific. and quite a character. Someone is a good rider there

Rosie i've owned since she was 11 months old, she jumped 4'6 without a rider in the school from an early age, drove us mad running through electric fences and clearing fencing!
thankfully she has grown out of it - i haven't taken her competing although she has a wonderful dressage pace. Unfortunately she has a recurring abscess, which renders her unsound regularly, we've had it hollowed out by the vet/smith and various attmepts to find the root cause but no long term successto date. It would be too much strain on her to put her into eventing, so i drive her shoeless.

Oh bad luck re the abcess. Tom had pus in a foot this past winter, but thankfully after treatment it cleared up. Tubbing was 'fun' though!
Well, maybe it will just go away one day for you, sometime things do. It's good to hear she's able to get about sometimes though

i guess,, i could also do polo, if only she was faster, nippier, and i was 10 years younger, didnt mind more injuries and of course had a clue how to play it

i loved polo, and any other fast and furious mounted games - i used to ride this grumpy old mare that everybody hated during my riding lessons, but we made a great team atthat for some reason - she came alive for games!
