My computer is making faint tinkling noises

Its only just started doing it, right on the edge of hearing range it sounds like a very distant bicycle bell. Makes no difference whether the speakers are on or off, and nothing is different to usual otherwise. Any thoughts on what might be causing it and should I worry about it?

Hamster, pixies or a fan starting to rub on something?

Its a laptop and as such gets picked up and put down a fair bit, but its generally treated fairly nicely. I just can't think what bit is likely to be doing it, do the fans in laptops actually go round and round and be likely to be causing it?

a distant father christmas?

Seriously yes the fans do go round and it could be that - you can take the cover off and ajust the fan on a laptop cos ive done it with a squeaking one...but you have to be careful not to lose the little screws!!

Moving things are what make noises.

So what moves in a laptop...
- any fans (usual thing on a mains machine is a wire being 'kissed' by a fan) - note that on a laptop the fan may only be run when needed, whereas on mains desktop units the fans usually run all the time.
- the cd/dvd drive. Take out any disks in there.
- the hard drive. Accessing data on different parts of the disk causes the 'head' to be waggled about (this happens very fast), which can produce (usually irregular) ticking (all the way to buzzing) noises. You should be able to set the energy saving preferences to stop the disk - and if that stops the noise you can determine the disk as being the cause (especially if you can restart the noise by causing disk data to be accessed). Any time your hard drive starts making a different noise (especially on a laptop that has a tough life) its a sensible time to ask yourself if your backups are really as up-to-date as you might hope...
