My dogs first training lessonI have put my Staff george in for gun dog training this Friday. Please don't laugh I know he is no retriever or lab but he is mustard when it comes to out in the fields, his trainer thinks because he has this willingless to please me all the time he has the potential to make a good gun dog, once he gets past the ripping everything to bits stage, but Dave his trainer thinks this is easily broken even in a Staff.
So please wish him luck. I know he is going to need it.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. I've often wondered if a mogrel rescue puppy could be trained as a gun dog, especially if there's any HPR in the parentage.

Thanks, I hope he dosn't let me down, but even so I cant hold it against him, Staffs a renound for being stubborn, but I am hoping because he loves the great out doors as much as me he will be a star.
I will obviously keep you all informed of his progress, and mine because he is not the only one being trained.

he might not be a natural but that doesn't mean he can't do it
everybody told me tht greyhounds can't do anything but run away but merlin seems to be able to do most things that most other dogs can do including retrieving a ball........

I think they've either got it or they haven't - I have two litter brother collies, hardly a day seperated - one can do a passable retreive, the other looks at me as though I've put my underwear on my head if I suggest 'fetch?' One's a born swimmer, the other's afraid of water. Dogs, hey?
Even if he doesn't make a perfect gun dog, you'll both have fun training.

dogs are adaptable
if they want to please it only needs explaining what they have to do ,i dont think breed (or type ) makes as much difference as personality and training
no reason a staff cant be a gun dog
my ex had a video of the posh bloke and the keeper training a new spaniel total ted and ralph
