My mouse is driving me nuts!Since yesterday my mouse has been acting werid. when I click things I get an icon come up - a circle with a line through it. though that only happens sometimes I have to double click links and sometimes when I click on something it picks up to be moved rather than opening or whatever. or I'll click something or try to drag something and nothing happens Done spybot, adaware and virus scans and fix all problems and restarted but its still happening. arrgggg

2steps, you are right in thinking its software NOT the mouse hardware.
However as its Windoze, I'll let others make better suggestions, but I'd suggest checking the control panel preferences, not just for the mouse, but also for disabled access and child-proofing restrictions. (AOL?) Circle with a line sounds like "No Entry - can't do that!"

On a mouse with a wheel on the top - if you push the wheel in, it gives you exactly that circle with a line in. Is it possible that some damage has occured to the wheel if there is one?

yes, it is just like a no entry sign. It is a logitech cordless mouse. Had it ages and its been fine. will check mouse preferences etc to see if somethings been changed
My keyboard is cordless as we, not even the same make. even though they have been fine together for weeks could something now be causing a problem between them?

if I press my wheel I get a circle with an arrow in and if I move the mouse the page I'm on scrolls

Have you ever cleaned it? Might be dust inside making a connection when it shouldn't be.
If it's a rollerball, the base plat should come out with a quick twist, then you'll see the three rollers inside. Use your fingernail to scrape the crud off. This is worth doing anyway, even though it's not directly related to your problem.
The circle with an arrow in - is it two black triangles, one pointing up, the other pointing down? If yes, this is normal behaviour. If it's not going off when you click, that means the connection inside isn't working properly. Check for dust.
Another thing you could try (probably easiest to do this first) is to make the mouse reconnect to the receiver. There is usually a button on the bottom of the mouse, and one on top of the receiver. Put the mouse and receiver close together so they can "see" each other OK, then press the button on the receiver, then the mouse. It'll take a second or two, and the lights might flash, but you should get the connection remade.
Thought - has the receiver fell off the unit, or has something been put in front of it?

if you are cordless could a new item be interfering ?
settings sounds likely
i use cd cleaner (propanol in water ) on my upside down optical one to clean it's eye socket but cleaning yours is worth a go by whatever seems sensible methods

This sounds like the behaviour to be expected with ClickLock engaged
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/clicklock.mspx
The windoze control panel for special needs access seems to be called "Accessibility Options".
No idea about the PC, but on the Mac such things can be turned on by pressing the Shift key (only) many times, and I have known people to accidentally turn it on by inadvertent fiddling with the shift key...

ahhhhh that could be it as a few of the keyboard keys were stuck as a bit of chain had dropped in there while I was working

Its normally beads that end up inside the keyboard. It rattled till I cleaned it out recently
