My timber.. the story of a piece of ply woodI make and sell chicken houses and pet houses etc. And i use recycled timber, I got interested in where it came from reading the tags in some of the boards i had, its is quite an interesting line to trace ( ok i am sad ).
Plywood, 5mm to 9 mm A1 exterior grade, i have this in 6 inch to 12 in wide strips at about 7 to 8 feet long, well the story for this is as follows.
The trees are grown in Canada, cut and possessed in Canada, and made into ply board in Canada, its then shipped to Japan ( they don't cut down their own timber), when it gets to Japan its cut for use, in this case to make packing cases for motorbikes ( Yamaha ), then its made into these cases and put on a boat ( dam great ship more like).. well the ship is sent to England with the motor bikes in their packing cases on board, they are unloaded and sent out to the multitude of outlets, the packing case is ripped to bit to get the bikes out, in nearly every case the timber is then put in a skip................
Now with a bit of care and a few more minutes work this timber can have a new life, instead of just protecting a motorbike for one trip, it can be used for a multitude of things..
1 strip can make 2 bird nest boxes, 3 wheel barrow garden planters, and various other things..
With a couple of dozen boards i can make a hen house for 12 hens, and it will last (if cared for) for many years........

My brother made a lovely big dining table using pinewood from a packing case which originally contained a machine that makes polystyrene cups. The machine came from Germany and I suppose it's possible that the packing case timber came from a German plantation.

might be worth approching any motorbike salerooms and asking to collect their old cases, certainly be a source of free wood for us and a reduced cost for them in disposale
