Mystery fungi

I'll take the camera down and get some shots in situ tomorrow - but quite distinctive things.

Largish, up to 20 cm across. Growing high up on a dead alder trunk.
Browny yellow. Not a polypore - more like an overgrown chanterelle from underneath. More than one sprouting from the same stem.

Spore print in progress.

I wondered branching oyster, but maybe not right time of year?

They are too knackered to consider eating so don't worry about poisoning us.

That's what I thought. Phillips says Spring to Autumn though.

Here you are - the big one is very manky - but it might be worth looking for some more of the smaller ones. There were still a lot of big ones on the tree.

Its a funny old game is mushrooming, you shouldn't believe that the seasonal thingies in books are entirely correct, especially with the Pleurotus genus. I've found both P. ostreatus and P. cornucopiae on midwinters and midsummers days.

Can't see enough of the stem to say for sure, but I'd bet thats P. cornucopiae just from how deep the gills are and the colour (they go like that). More likely ID than P. ostreatus.

Spore print should confirm, there should be enough spores left for a pale lilac. Of course, if you get another colour, then its something else...
