Nettle soup

Is it an acquired taste? I made some yesterday for the first time, felt like a freak picking nettles while my son had football practice. All the Mums telling me you can buy soup in a tin these days!

When I made it, I almost couldnt bring myself to taste it, I think the green colour was putting me off (not sure what other colour I thought it should be!), and now not sure if I like the taste or not! Will have some more tomorrow, just wondered if other people like it or not.

Yep, lovely stuff & cheap as anything, must make some this weekend.

I'll never believe food is in short supply for as long as most people don't eat nettles.

Well I don't Tiff, wish I did but I find it horrible. Nettles do make great liquid fertiliser though, thats what I use them for. Very Happy

Reckon it's a love or hate it thing. And an acquired taste, so persevere.

I love 'em - in soup, as a vegetable instead of spinach, in wines both still and sparkling, in beer....
sally_in_wales

I love them too, as a confirmed omnivore I reckon bacon does special things to the flavour, but they are good anyway
Penny

I love them too. They taste even better if you don't know what you're eating..."lovely soup Mum" "It's nettle soup" "Yuc!!!!" Laughing Laughing bless them!

I had the same reaction, with parents though Laughing

If had them both good and bad. I do think it's possible to get an 'off' patch of nettles
Penny

I wonder if it's when you get the false nettles by mistake?
Treacodactyl

I tend to prefer stinging nettles mixed in with other ingredients, so used in curries, stews, pasta etc I think is better to start with.

Thanks for your tips, I think I'll try another batch from a different site and see how that goes. I'm the sort of person that loves nearly all food, so I'm determined to make an effort to like it!
Green Rosie

Love nettle soup, made a yummy colcannon with nettles instead of cabbage but not so keen on them as just a veg

with a habanero chilli dressing to give it a bit more bite.

Try flinging in some sorrel. Gives an added something. In soup, that is.

I love nettle soup -think the green colour is just amazing. But there is a funny ?fishy? pong when you first put them in the pan - I wonder if that's what puts people off?
try adding a couple of handfuls of frozen peas to nettle soup, adds a little sweetness to the end result.
I would be interested to hear what recipes people who don't like it are using. many older recipes say to boil the nettles for up to 15 minutes Shocked crazy.
I've never yet met a person who didn't like my version ( well actually its pretty much HFW's )...

Small nettle isn't meant to be as good, but I haven't eaten it. Dead nettles are a totally different flavour, not at all a good soup ingredient, but the little flowers (from white and red dead nettles and others such as yellow archangel, pick only the variegated form and not the ancient woodland indicator pure species) are quite adorably sweet in salad.

Oh, lots of common mallow about at the moment; if you're feeling experimental, blitz up some mallow leaves in the nettle soup too, does funky things to the texture. Garnished with mallow flowers, its really rather lovely to see (I seem to have a thing for edible flower garnishes).

Better when it's not carbonated Embarassed

Had it when we went to River Cottage HQ a couple of years ago, couple of fillets of smoked Pollock in it. Very Happy
