New Cake Club at work

I know this is a favourite topic of the recipes board but saves me from searching

next week we are starting a cake club at work where people take it in turns to bring in cake (preferable home made) and we all share

I am making one for this but I think I have already decided on a white and dark chocolate checkerboard cake

That being said I would love to know what you think makes a good cake for such an event

What a fantastic idea. I'd say something homely and simple to get going with to encourage everyone. A lemon drizzle cake has got to be a warm Spring weather favourite...

Its only going to be once a month to start with so hopefully it won't be that bad

Hash cake? Very Happy

my chocolate marble cake went down well yesterday. I was out of pink food colouring so I used chocolate, plain and coffee sponge mixes together and then swirled old fashioned chocolate buttercream on top.

Can't go wrong though with a good simple victoria sandwich with some good fruity homemade jam inside.

Not a proper cake, but I always found this went down extremely well for birthdays etc. Both in terms of starving gannet speed of consumption and number of requests for the recipe.

Chocolate Fridge Cake

4oz butter
3oz golden syrup
1oz cocoa powder
2oz seedless raisins
8oz mixed sweet biscuits, crushed
4oz plain chocolate

Put butter, syrup, cocoa powder and raisins in a pan and heat gently, stirring, until the butter has melted.

Removed from heat and stir in crushed biscuits.

Press into a well-greased 7-8 inch square tin.

Melt chocolate and spread over biscuit mixture.

Leave to cool before eating!!

Variations:

Replace raisins with chopped prunes, cherries etc.
Use 2oz syrup and 1 oz black treacle.
Soak raisins overnight in brandy or rum.

Something that is really nice for summer months is to make your own scones, take in some double cream and strawberries/jam and then everyone can make their own cream teas!

thats a great idea, haven't made scones in years

Double cream? Clotted, surely.

On that note, I think the presentation counts a lot in these things. If you are making a chocolate cake then maybe having some cold pouring cream available will really set it off well.

certainly for my first cake some nice icing will be important

There are lots of ways to present cake nicely, given the nature of the setting pouring cream is unlikely to work well though unfortunately
